Shulker Box — Minecraft block

Overview

A shulker box is the only container in Minecraft that keeps its contents when you break it, and that single property makes it the most important storage block in the game. Break one and it drops as an item with all 27 slots intact, so a shulker box in your inventory is effectively 27 extra stacks you can carry anywhere — through a portal, into the End, down a mineshaft. It is why every serious mining trip, End raid or base move ends with boxes in the inventory rather than a chest run, and why players describe getting to the End as the point where inventory management stops being a problem. A shulker box can be dyed any of the 16 colours, and washing it in a cauldron of water removes the dye without touching the contents. It opens in any orientation, including on a ceiling, and needs one free block in the direction it faces to open. The one restriction is that a shulker box cannot be placed inside another shulker box, which stops infinite nesting. Its hopper interaction is normal, so it can be loaded and unloaded automatically like a chest.

Carrying 27 stacks of loot home in a single inventory slot, sorting a base into portable modules, and moving an entire storage room without a minecart. Ender chests share slots; shulker boxes multiply them.

Minecraft classifies Shulker Box as a storage block. Shulker Box has a crafting recipe, so it is renewable as long as you can source its ingredients. At a hardness of 2 it takes a moment to break but never slows a build down.

Broken correctly, it drops itself. Because it is transparent it does not block light. A blast resistance of 2 means a single creeper will clear it away.

It does not stack — each one takes its own slot. You make it with Shulker Shell and Chest. 16 recipes call for it, including Black Shulker Box, Blue Shulker Box, Brown Shulker Box and 13 more.

How to get it

Craft one from 2 shulker shells and 1 chest. Shells drop only from shulkers, which live in end cities on the outer End islands, at a 50 percent base rate improved by Looting.

Tips

Label boxes by dyeing them: colour is the fastest sorting system that survives being thrown into a chest.
A shulker box cannot go inside another shulker box, so plan around 27 slots per box and no nesting.
Break a placed box with any tool — a pickaxe is fastest — and the contents always survive; there is no drop loss.
Wash a dyed box in a cauldron to strip the colour without emptying it, which saves recrafting from 2 fresh shells.

How long it takes to break

At a hardness of 2, Shulker Box takes 3 seconds to punch out and 0.35 seconds with a netherite-tier tool of the correct class.

You are looking at 0.5 seconds on iron and 0.4 on diamond — the iron step is where the time actually falls.

Nothing here needs a minimum tier: whatever you swing, the block still drops, and the only difference is how long it takes.

Each Efficiency level adds level² + 1 to the tool's speed, so a level V tool clears this about 3.5 times faster than an unenchanted one.

Properties

Shulker Box resists blasts at 2, which is not enough to survive anything explosive nearby. Light passes through it, and it emits none of its own. Stack size is 1, meaning one per inventory slot. A pickaxe is fastest here; any other class mines it at bare-hand speed, because the bonus only applies to the class the block is tagged for.
