Two shells and a chest make one box, so a full set of boxes for a serious base is a lot of shells. They come from shulkers, which live only in end cities on the outer End islands, and each shulker drops 0 to 1 shells at a 50% chance, rising with Looting III to about two thirds. Shulkers teleport when damaged and their projectiles apply Levitation, which is genuinely dangerous over a void gap — most end city deaths are levitation followed by a long fall. The efficient approach is to bring Looting III, block the doorway behind you, and shoot them from a corner where the levitation cannot carry you off the edge. Twenty shells is ten boxes, which is enough to change how a base is organised permanently. No other item changes how a base is organised as completely as a shelf of full boxes does.
