Overview
Tricky Trials, shipped as Java Edition 1.21, answered a complaint the community had made for a decade: that Minecraft's combat content was either trivially farmable or a one-off you cleared and never returned to. The trial chamber is neither. Trial spawners release a fixed wave scaled to how many players are standing nearby, then go inert for thirty minutes, so the structure rewards visits rather than automation, and vaults hand out their loot once per player in exchange for a trial key rather than sitting there as a chest to be emptied. Ominous bottles then let you raise the difficulty on purpose — drink one inside a chamber and the spawners and vaults upgrade to their ominous versions, with harder fights and better rewards, including the heavy core that the Mace is built from. The mace itself is the most interesting weapon Mojang has shipped in years, because it converts fall distance into damage and cancels your own fall on a connecting hit, which makes an entire playstyle out of jumping. Away from combat, the crafter finally closed the automation gap that had existed since launch, and copper and tuff both gained full block families.
Repeatable underground combat with real rewards, a new melee weapon built around falling, the first block that can craft automatically, two new mobs, and complete copper and tuff building sets. It also replaced the old Bad Omen mechanic with ominous bottles you choose to drink.
Tricky Trials was a combat and redstone update built around the trial chamber, a structure designed to be revisited rather than looted once. Trial spawners release scaled waves and then go inert, vaults hand out loot for trial keys, and ominous bottles let you deliberately raise the difficulty for better rewards. The mace gave melee players a genuinely new playstyle, and the crafter closed a redstone gap that had existed since launch.
How to get it
Java Edition 1.21 was released on 13 June 2024 as a major update. Choose it in the launcher, or run 1.21.1 for a modded server — the 2 are identical in content and 1.21.1 is what most modpacks from that period target.
Tips
- Trial spawner waves scale with the number of players nearby, so 2 players face a much harder chamber than 1 does.
- The mace does 6 base damage and has 500 durability; a 3-block drop already deals 18, and it is repaired with breeze rods.
- Killing a raid captain now drops an Ominous Bottle rather than applying Bad Omen directly — you choose when the raid starts.
- The crafter needs a redstone pulse to craft, not a constant signal, so drive it from a clock or an observer rather than a lever.

Worlds always upgrade forwards and never downgrade: a world opened in a newer version cannot be opened in an older one again, so back it up before the first launch on a new release.

Frequently asked questions
What is the point of ominous bottles?
Drinking one gives Bad Omen, which becomes Trial Omen inside a trial chamber and upgrades every spawner and vault there. It is how you opt into a harder run with better loot.
Is the mace worth crafting?
If you fight from height, yes. Base damage is 6, but the smash bonus adds 4 per block for the first three blocks fallen, so a jump attack routinely outdamages a netherite sword.
Can trial chambers be farmed?
Not in the usual sense. Spawners go inert for thirty minutes after a wave and vaults pay out once per player, so the structure is repeatable but not automatable.
