Overview
Everything about a woodland mansion is a logistics problem before it is a combat problem. The building generates only in dark forest and usually tens of thousands of blocks from spawn, which means the trip out is measured in hours unless you build a Nether highway to it, and the trip home is worse because you will be carrying a full inventory. Buy a woodland explorer map from a cartographer villager first; without one you are searching a biome that itself is uncommon. Once there, the danger is the room layout rather than any single mob. Every interior room is unlit, so ordinary creepers and skeletons spawn inside alongside the vindicators that generate with the building, and a vindicator hits for 13 and disables a shield the moment it lands a blow with its axe. Evokers are the prize — each one drops a Totem of Undying — but they summon vexes that fly through walls, so fight them in a doorway rather than an open hall. Light rooms as you clear them, chart the secret rooms by looking for 1×1 gaps in the floor plan, and set a bed or a respawn point outside before you go in.
Totems of undying from the evokers, allays from the cages, enchanted books and a diamond chestplate or hoe from the chest rooms, and an enormous stock of dark oak. The mansion is also the only non-raid source of evokers, so it doubles as a totem run for players with no village.
An enormous three-storey house of dark oak and cobblestone, generated only in dark forests and typically tens of thousands of blocks from spawn, which makes a woodland explorer map from a cartographer villager the practical way to find one. Inside is a randomised set of themed rooms: a fake End portal room, a chicken-and-lava trap, hidden treasure rooms behind secret walls, and rooms full of vindicators and evokers. It is the only reliable source of totems of undying outside raids, and the rooms are pitch dark, so mobs also spawn inside.
It is very rare in the Overworld, restricted to Dark Forest, and it generates on the surface.
How to get it
Mansions generate only in dark forest biomes and are very rare — tens of thousands of blocks from spawn is normal, and 2 within the same few thousand blocks is not. A cartographer villager at journeyman level sells a woodland explorer map for emeralds and a compass, and that map is by far the most reliable way to reach one.
Tips
- Buy the explorer map before you leave, and check the cartographer's other offers — a second map is cheaper than a second expedition.
- Vindicators disable shields, so bring a bow or a crossbow and thin them out before anything reaches axe range.
- Look for rooms with no visible door: the secret treasure rooms are sealed behind ordinary dark oak planks you simply mine through.
- Set your spawn point outside the mansion. Dying inside with a full inventory of totems and books is how most mansion trips are wasted.
Version notes
Added in 1.11 with the illagers and the totem of undying. 1.19 added allays to the cages, which gave the mansion a second reason to exist beyond totems.
Properties
It generates in the Overworld, which is the only dimension with a day-night cycle and weather, and the one every distance in the game is measured against. In a world with cheats on, /locate structure minecraft:woodland_mansion gives the coordinates of the nearest one. Without cheats, an explorer map from a cartographer villager is the reliable route for the structures that have one; everything else is exploration.

Where it generates
Woodland Mansion generates in one biome: Dark Forest. Outside those it will not generate at all, however far you travel.
Notable loot
Its loot includes Enchanted Book, Diamond Hoe, Diamond Chestplate, Iron Ingot, Gold Ingot, Saddle, and Lead. These are the notable entries rather than the full loot table — the common filler (bread, coal, iron nuggets) is omitted, and in some structures the best of it comes from a vault or a spawner rather than a chest.
Mobs found here
Vindicator, Evoker, Vex, Allay, Zombie, Skeleton and 2 more generate here. Several of them spawn nowhere else, which is usually the reason to make the trip.
What to watch out for
4 things to prepare for before you go in:
- Vindicators hit for 13 and disable shields
- Evokers summon vexes that pass through walls
- Unlit rooms spawn ordinary hostile mobs
- Extremely far from spawn with no easy way home

Frequently asked questions
Do woodland mansion chests contain totems of undying?
No. Totems only ever drop from evokers, and the mansion is worth visiting because it contains several of them. The chests hold enchanted books, iron, gold, a diamond chestplate or hoe, saddles and leads.
Is a raid farm better than mansion hunting for totems?
For volume, yes — a village raid spawns evokers from wave five onwards and can be repeated indefinitely. A mansion holds a fixed handful and is a one-time clear.
How far away do mansions generate?
Typically tens of thousands of blocks from world spawn, because the structure is spaced far more thinly than any other Overworld building. Expect a dedicated expedition, not a detour.
How do I find Woodland Mansion?
Woodland Mansion generates in the Overworld, only in Dark Forest, and is very rare. /locate structure minecraft:woodland_mansion finds the nearest one instantly with cheats on.
What loot is in Woodland Mansion?
The notable entries are Enchanted Book, Diamond Hoe, Diamond Chestplate, Iron Ingot, Gold Ingot, Saddle and 1 more.
When was Woodland Mansion added?
Woodland Mansion was added in Java Edition 1.11.
