Overview
A Wind Charge is a throwable shove. It does essentially no damage; what it does is produce a burst of wind that knocks entities away, pushes you in the opposite direction, and — usefully — flips levers, presses buttons and opens doors and trapdoors from a distance. Thrown at your own feet it launches you upward several blocks with no fall damage from the launch itself, which is the movement trick 1.21 quietly added to survival. That launch is what makes the Mace practical: charge up, drop, smash. Throwing costs a half-second cooldown, so it is a burst tool rather than a spam tool, and the wind burst passes through the block you are standing on, meaning you can shove a mob off a ledge without stepping onto it yourself. Supply is not a problem once you have found a trial chamber: a breeze drops Breeze Rods and each rod crafts into 4 charges, so a single chamber visit is worth a stack. They also work in dispensers, which is how automatic launch pads and mob-clearing traps are built. Redstone builders use them as a cheap, blockless entity pusher where a piston would need a whole circuit.
Getting height for a mace smash, knocking mobs off ledges or out of your face, and triggering distant buttons and levers without wiring redstone to them.
Wind Charge is a miscellaneous item in Minecraft 1.21.4. It stacks to 64. Chest loot in Trial Chambers can contain it.
The recipe calls for Breeze Rod. It is not used in any crafting recipe.
How to get it
Craft 4 from 1 Breeze Rod, which drops from a breeze in a trial chamber. Trial spawners produce breezes again after a 30-minute cooldown, so the supply is repeatable.
Tips
- Aim at the ground just in front of you, not straight down, if you want horizontal distance instead of pure height.
- The half-second cooldown applies to hand throws only — a dispenser array can fire far faster than you can.
- Wind charges open trapdoors and fence gates as well as doors, which makes them a fast remote opener for a mob farm.
- They do not damage you, but the fall afterwards does; carry them alongside a mace or a water bucket.
Version notes
Added in 1.21. The hand-throw cooldown was raised to 0.5 seconds during the 1.21 snapshots after early builds made the launch spammable.
