Overview
A Fire Charge lights things without spending tool durability, and it is the ammunition that turns a dispenser into a flamethrower. Used by hand it ignites the block face in front of you exactly like flint and steel, consuming one charge instead of one durability point — which makes it the better option when you are lighting dozens of things, such as a wall of candles or a long TNT line. Loaded into a dispenser it fires as a small ghast fireball that travels in a straight line, sets fire where it lands and damages anything in the way, so it is the standard ignition for automatic TNT cannons and the classic build for a defensive trap or a Nether-themed lighting effect. The recipe yields 3 charges from one gunpowder, one blaze powder and one coal or charcoal, so once you have a blaze farm they cost effectively nothing. Ghasts themselves shoot the same projectile, and a fireball deflected back with a well-timed melee hit or a shield is how the ghast fight is meant to go. Keep a stack in the ender chest as portal insurance.
Igniting portals, TNT and campfires without consuming a lighter's durability, and giving dispensers a ranged fire attack for traps, cannons and mob-clearing defences. Three charges per craft makes them cheaper than they look.
In Minecraft, Fire Charge is a miscellaneous item. A full stack holds 64. It also turns up in chests in Ruined Portal (Overworld) and Ruined Portal (Nether).
You make it with Gunpowder, Blaze Powder, and Coal. No recipe takes it as an ingredient.
How to get it
Craft 3 from 1 Gunpowder, 1 Blaze Powder and 1 Coal or Charcoal. A blaze farm at a nether fortress makes the blaze powder side effectively free.
Tips
- Use charges rather than flint and steel when lighting many candles or a long TNT line — the lighter would run out first.
- A dispenser aimed along a corridor makes a cheap base defence; the fireball ignites the ground and blocks the approach.
- Fire charges do not light a nether portal any more cheaply than flint and steel, but they work as an emergency backup.
- Never fire one indoors in a wooden build; the projectile leaves fire wherever it strikes, not just at the target.
Properties
One inventory slot holds 64, so a double chest holds 3,456.
