Overview
Fire Protection reduces burning damage and, just as importantly, shortens how long you stay on fire once something has lit you. That second half is what makes it feel stronger than its numbers suggest, because most fire deaths are a long burn while you panic rather than the initial contact. It is the specialist to reach for when the Nether is your workplace: blazes, ghast fireballs, lava contact, magma blocks and the burning that follows all fall under it. Against everything else — arrows, melee, explosions, falls — it does nothing, and since it cannot share a piece with Protection you are giving up general defence to get it. That trade is worth making on a purpose-built Nether set and almost never on your everyday armour. The comparison worth making honestly is with a Potion of Fire Resistance, which grants complete immunity for three to eight minutes and costs one magma cream. For a planned trip the potion is simply better. Fire Protection is what covers you when the potion runs out, when you are caught unprepared, or when you are working around lava for hours rather than minutes.
Long stretches of work around lava and blazes — a Nether base, a blaze farm, an ancient debris tunnel — where potions would need re-drinking every few minutes.
Cuts fire, lava and burning damage specifically, and shortens how long you stay on fire. Useful for Nether trips, but it cannot be combined with Protection, Blast Protection or Projectile Protection.
Fire Protection goes up to IV. It is a standard enchantment, so an enchanting table can roll it directly.
At weight 5 it takes up about 14–18% of the offer pool for an item that accepts it; the larger that share, the less rerolling a level-30 table costs you.
How to get it
Enchant armour at a table or apply books; 2 level III books make level IV on an anvil. Weight 5 makes it a common roll, and it conflicts with Protection, Blast Protection and Projectile Protection on the same piece.
Tips
- A Potion of Fire Resistance is strictly better for a planned trip; this covers the moment it runs out.
- The reduced burn time matters more than the damage cut, because most fire deaths happen while still alight.
- It conflicts with Protection, so build a separate Nether set rather than mixing pieces.
- Fire damage bypasses armour points entirely, which is why an enchantment rather than a better tier is the answer here.
What each level does
What each level actually gives you. The jump from I to IV is where most of the value sits, and an anvil can combine two III books into one IV.
Fire Protection IV reduces fire damage by 32% per piece and burn time by 60%.
| Level | Effect |
|---|---|
| I | 8% less fire damage from this piece; burn time −15% |
| II | 16% less fire damage from this piece; burn time −30% |
| III | 24% less fire damage from this piece; burn time −45% |
| IV | 32% less fire damage from this piece; burn time −60% |
Properties
An enchanting table can offer it directly, and a librarian villager will sell it as a book — rerolling a librarian's trade by breaking and replacing their lectern is the cheapest route to it.

Incompatible enchantments
Fire Protection cannot share an item with Blast Protection, Projectile Protection, and Protection.
Combining them costs levels and still leaves you with only one of the two. Decide which you actually want before the book goes on the anvil.
How to get it
Enchanting table or an enchanted book on an anvil.
The level-30 slot at a fifteen-bookshelf table is where to look; a smaller ring means lower levels and a thinner offer pool.
Command
With cheats enabled the first line puts Fire Protection IV on the held item, and the second gives you one that is already enchanted. From 1.20.5 onward the item syntax uses the "enchantments" component.
