Since there is no recipe, they come from Armorer trades, from loot chests, and from the small proportion of zombies and skeletons that spawn wearing armour in higher difficulties. In practice most players first meet them by killing an armoured husk in a desert or a skeleton in a mineshaft and finding the leggings in the drop, which makes them one of the pleasant accidents of an early world. If you are running a mob farm at hard difficulty, armoured spawns are common enough that a full chainmail set assembles itself over a few hours without any effort. Repair is with iron ingots on an anvil, exactly as for iron gear. As a stopgap between leather and diamond, this piece is genuinely good — the second-biggest protection slot, filled for free. Wear the drop rather than saving it; it protects better than anything you could craft that week.

Statistically it sits just below iron: 12 armour points across the set against iron's 15, with identical durability values of 165 to 240, and a better enchantability of 12 against iron's 9. Iron ingots repair it on an anvil despite not crafting it, which is the quirk everyone forgets. For collectors it is the only set that can be assembled purely by exploring and trading, which is why a complete chainmail kit on an armour stand means something.

How to get it

Not craftable. Armorer villagers sell them for around 5 to 9 emeralds, and armoured mobs at hard difficulty drop worn pieces at roughly 8.5%, rising with Looting.

Tips

Hard difficulty spawns armoured mobs far more often, so a mob farm assembles chainmail sets on its own.
Looting III on the sword raises the chance that an armoured mob drops what it is wearing.
Repair with iron ingots; there is no chainmail material and no recipe to make one.
Four points on the legs is worth more than any helmet in the game, so wear them rather than storing them.
