Overview

A Chainmail Helmet cannot be crafted at all, which is what makes it interesting: iron ingots do not produce chainmail, and no recipe in the game does. It arrives as loot — from Armorer villager trades, from zombies and skeletons that spawn wearing armour and drop it, and from a handful of loot chests. Statistically it is identical to iron in durability at 165 and gives the same 2 armour points, with a slightly better enchantability of 12 against iron's 9, so a chainmail helmet found early is a straightforward free upgrade over whatever you are wearing. Its real appeal is aesthetic: the chainmail texture is distinctive, it is the only armour set most players never build deliberately, and a full chainmail kit reads as something earned rather than mined. Repairs use iron ingots on an anvil, so keeping one alive is no harder than keeping iron alive. If an Armorer villager offers one, it is usually worth the emeralds simply because the trade unlocks the rest of that villager's tree. Finding one early feels like the world handing you a present it did not have to give.

A free early upgrade over leather when loot or a trade supplies it, with iron's durability, a better enchantability, and a texture nothing else in the game has.

Chainmail Helmet is an armour item in Minecraft 1.21.4. It has 165 points of durability. Use Iron Ingot on an anvil to repair it.

Enchanting it is possible and generally recommended. It does not stack — each one takes its own slot. It goes into exactly one recipe: Iron Nugget.

About the chainmail armour set

How to get it

Not craftable. Armorer villagers sell chainmail pieces for around 5 to 7 emeralds, and armoured zombies and skeletons drop what they are wearing at roughly an 8.5% chance per piece.

Tips

  • Repair it with iron ingots on an anvil — the material it cannot be crafted from is the material that fixes it.
  • Armorer villagers are the only reliable supply; the mob drop chance is too low to farm deliberately.
  • Chainmail's enchantability of 12 beats iron's 9, so a found piece is worth enchanting before an iron one.
  • Skeletons and zombies that spawn with armour keep it on death, so clear armoured mobs rather than avoiding them.

Properties

Chainmail Helmet lasts 165 uses before it breaks, and Iron Ingot repairs it on an anvil. Two worn copies can also be merged, on an anvil or a grindstone. Unbreaking III roughly quadruples the lifespan, and Mending replaces the repair cost with experience. Worn, it adds 2 armour points. Its enchantability of 12 decides how good the enchanting table's offers are: the higher the number, the more often a level-30 table offers the top-tier enchantment rather than a weak one. Chainmail Helmet does not stack — each one occupies an inventory slot of its own.

How it compares to the rest of the set

Every tier of helmet in the game, side by side, so the trade-off is visible in one place: Chainmail Helmet sits 2 of 6.

The armour column is the points each piece adds and the toughness column is what blunts a heavy hit. Gold looks cheap on paper and wears out fastest; Netherite Helmet is the end of the line at 407 durability.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make Chainmail Helmet in Minecraft?

Chainmail Helmet has no crafting recipe; it is obtained from mobs, chests or trading.

What is the stack size of Chainmail Helmet?

Chainmail Helmet does not stack at all. Every one you carry takes an inventory slot of its own, which is the practical limit on how many you take on a trip.

How much durability does Chainmail Helmet have?

Chainmail Helmet has 165 durability, and can be repaired on an anvil with Iron Ingot.

Can Chainmail Helmet be enchanted?

Yes — 10 enchantments apply to it, at an enchanting table with fifteen bookshelves, or from an enchanted book on an anvil. Mending is usually the one worth hunting for, because it removes the repair cost entirely.

The rest of the set

Chainmail Helmet is one of 7 variants of the same shape. The others are made from different materials, so their numbers differ:
