Overview
Explosions are the damage type ordinary armour handles worst, and Blast Protection is the specialist that fixes it. It cuts the damage from creepers, TNT, end crystals, beds detonated in the Nether or the End, and the wither's own blasts — and it reduces the knockback too, which matters more than players expect, because most creeper deaths are the fall or the lava that follows the shove rather than the blast itself. Being mutually exclusive with Protection is what keeps it a specialist. General Protection is the better all-round answer, so Blast Protection belongs on a set you build for a particular job: raiding bastions where piglin brutes and magma cubes are the least of your worries, running an End crystal fight, or working around a wither farm. A full set of it turns a point-blank creeper from a death into an inconvenience. The nuance worth knowing is that the four protection types share one cap, so mixing Blast Protection on the chestplate with Protection on the leggings is legal but weaker than committing to one — the game does not reward hedging here.
A dedicated set for explosive work — bastion raids, wither summons, End crystal fights and TNT mining — where the blast and the knockback it causes are the main threat.
Reduces explosion damage and knockback from creepers, TNT, beds in the Nether and end crystals. A niche pick that shines in the Nether and against raids.
Blast Protection goes up to IV. It is a standard enchantment, so an enchanting table can roll it directly.
Weight 2 gives it roughly 6–7% of the pool a table draws from for an item in its slot, and that share is about how often a level-30 table puts it in front of you.
How to get it
Enchant armour at a table with 15 bookshelves, or apply books; 2 level III books combine on an anvil into level IV. Its weight of 2 makes it a rarer table roll than Protection, whose weight is 10.
Tips
- The knockback reduction matters as much as the damage cut; most creeper deaths are the fall that follows.
- It cannot share a piece with Protection, Fire Protection or Projectile Protection.
- Beds explode in the Nether and the End, and this is the only enchantment that meaningfully softens that mistake.
- Run the numbers with the armour calculator before splitting protections across pieces.
What each level does
Here is what each level does. IV is worth the trip, and you can reach it by combining two III books on an anvil rather than rolling for it.
Blast Protection IV reduces explosion damage by 32% per piece.
| Level | Effect |
|---|---|
| I | 8% less explosion damage and knockback from this piece |
| II | 16% less explosion damage and knockback from this piece |
| III | 24% less explosion damage and knockback from this piece |
| IV | 32% less explosion damage and knockback from this piece |
Properties
It sits in the table's own offer pool, and a librarian will trade the book for it, so reroll the lectern until that offer comes up.

Incompatible enchantments
Blast Protection cannot share an item with Fire Protection, Projectile Protection, and Protection.
An anvil will not put both on one item: the conflicting enchantment is simply not applied, and the level cost is charged all the same, so check the pair before you commit a book you cannot replace.
How to get it
Enchanting table or an enchanted book.
The level-30 slot at a fifteen-bookshelf table is where to look; a smaller ring means lower levels and a thinner offer pool.
Command
Cheats on: the first command enchants what is in your hand with Blast Protection IV, and the second spawns the finished item. The component syntax below replaced the old NBT tag in 1.20.5.
