Curse of Binding

Curse of Binding

Max 1CurseTreasure only

Overview

Curse of Binding locks an armour piece to your body. Once worn it cannot be taken off, swapped or moved to a chest — it leaves only when the item breaks or you die, and a grindstone will not lift the curse either. In single-player survival that is almost purely a nuisance: you find a cursed helmet in a chest, put it on without reading the tooltip, and now you are wearing a leather cap until something kills you. In multiplayer and on adventure maps it becomes a design tool. A map maker can hand a player a mask they must wear for a chapter, a server can lock a costume to a role, and a griefer can leave a cursed pumpkin in a chest for someone who does not check. The pumpkin case is the cruellest, since a carved pumpkin on your head also obscures the screen. Treat every treasure-loot armour piece as suspect: check the tooltip before equipping, and if you want the base item without the curse, note that combining it on an anvil does not remove the curse either — only breaking the item does.

Map and server design, where locking a helmet, a costume or a carved pumpkin to a player for a chapter is exactly the constraint the designer wants.

Prevents you from removing the armour piece once it is worn — it comes off only when it breaks or you die. A trap enchantment, mostly used on adventure maps.

Curse of Binding caps at I — one level, with nothing above it. Being a curse, it sticks: a grindstone cannot strip it, and it is never an upgrade.

It carries a weight of 1, but no table rolls it. Loot chests, fishing and librarians are where that weight is felt instead.

How to get it

Treasure only: chest loot, fishing, and librarian trades. It never appears at an enchanting table, has just 1 level, and a grindstone cannot strip it once the piece is enchanted.

Tips

  • Read the tooltip on every looted armour piece before equipping it — the curse is listed in red and is easy to skip.
  • A grindstone removes ordinary enchantments but never a curse, so the piece is committed once worn.
  • It applies to elytra and carved pumpkins too, which is the version most likely to be used against you.
  • Dying is the only quick way out; keep a spare set so the loss is inconvenient rather than expensive.

What each level does

Curse of Binding has one level, so there is nothing to upgrade — a second book of it on an anvil adds nothing but cost.

Curse of Binding has a single level.

Properties

The enchanting table will not roll it, and librarians sell it as a book — breaking and replacing a lectern rerolls the trade until one does.
