Ominous Bottle

Ominous Bottle

FoodHunger restored 1

Overview

An Ominous Bottle is 1.21's way of putting Bad Omen in your hands instead of on your head. Before this update, killing an illager captain applied the Bad Omen effect immediately, and the next village you walked into started a raid whether you were ready or not. Now the captain drops a bottle, and the effect only exists when you choose to drink it — which means you can bank omens, carry them, and use them where they help. Bad Omen comes in levels I to V, and the bottle's level is set by the captain's raid tier; the higher the level, the harder the raid and the better the loot. What you do with it depends on where you go. Enter a village with Bad Omen and it converts to Raid Omen, which starts a raid a few seconds later. Enter a trial chamber with it and it converts to Trial Omen for 15 minutes, which turns every trial spawner in the chamber ominous — harder waves, and ominous vaults that hold the Heavy Core. Bank a few before you need them.

Starting a raid at a time of your choosing, and — drunk before a trial chamber — upgrading every spawner in it to ominous so the vaults produce mace ingredients and trial-only enchantments.

As food, Ominous Bottle is judged on two numbers: hunger restored and saturation. It gives back 1 hunger and 0.2 saturation. It stacks to 64.

Nothing on the crafting grid is made from it.

How to get it

Kill an illager patrol captain, an outpost captain or a raid captain — the banner-carrying pillager — and it drops 1 Ominous Bottle. Levels run from I to V depending on which wave the captain came from.

Tips

  • Drink it deliberately: an unopened bottle is safe to carry, unlike the old Bad Omen effect that followed you home.
  • Drink a level V bottle before a trial chamber for the best ominous vault loot the game offers.
  • Milk removes Bad Omen instantly if you drank one and changed your mind before reaching a village.
  • Higher levels mean harder raids: level V adds extra illagers per wave, so bring a full kit and a totem.

Version notes

Added in 1.21. It replaced the old behaviour where killing a captain applied Bad Omen directly, and it is the mechanism behind both Raid Omen and Trial Omen.

Properties

Eating it restores 1 hunger and 0.2 saturation — a ratio of 0.2, which is what decides how long you stay full rather than how fast the bar refills. One inventory slot holds 64, so a double chest holds 3,456.

How it compares to other foods

Sorted by saturation ratio, Ominous Bottle is 41 of 41 foods in the game. Ratio is saturation divided by hunger restored: it is what decides how long the hunger bar stays still, not how fast it refills.

Golden Carrot leads the list at a ratio of 2.4, and anything at or above 1.6 is worth carrying on a long trip.
