Bottle o' Enchanting

Bottle o' Enchanting

Miscellaneous

Overview

A Bottle o' Enchanting is stored experience: throw one and it shatters, dropping 3 to 11 experience points wherever it lands. That makes it the only way to bank levels — experience otherwise exists solely on your own bar and is lost, mostly, when you die. A chest of bottles is a chest of enchanting levels waiting for the anvil work you have not done yet, and on a server it is a currency that can be traded, gifted or stockpiled in a way that raw experience cannot. The practical source is a cleric villager: at master level a cleric sells bottles for a small number of emeralds each, and a cleric with a rotten flesh trade at the bottom of its tree turns a zombie farm into an unlimited experience supply. Bottles also generate in some loot chests. There is no crafting recipe in Java Edition. Thirty levels of enchanting takes a great many bottles, so most players use them for anvil repairs and Mending top-ups rather than for enchanting from zero. A wall of bottles behind an anvil is what a well-run late-game base looks like.

Banking experience outside your own level bar — for anvil work, Mending repairs, or as a tradeable store of value on a multiplayer server. It is the only portable form experience takes.

Bottle o' Enchanting is a miscellaneous item in Minecraft 1.21.4. It stacks to 64. Nothing on the crafting grid is made from it.

How to get it

Buy from a master-level cleric villager for a few emeralds each; there is no recipe in Java Edition. Each bottle thrown drops 3 to 11 experience points.

Tips

  • Level a cleric to master and the bottle trade becomes an unlimited experience supply from emeralds.
  • Throw bottles at your feet next to an anvil rather than carrying levels around before a trip.
  • Mending gear repaired next to a pile of thrown bottles is the fastest way to restore a full kit.
  • Combine with a rotten flesh trade so a zombie farm funds the emeralds that buy the bottles.

Properties

One inventory slot holds 64, so a double chest holds 3,456.
