Overview
Wheat is the crop block that grows from wheat seeds on farmland, and it is the foundation of the food economy. It passes through 8 visible growth stages, and only the last one gives a full harvest: break it early and you get the seeds back and nothing else, which is the single most common mistake in a new player's farm. Fully grown it drops 1 wheat and 1 to 4 seeds, so a farm expands itself without any input. Wheat's uses run wider than bread. Three wheat make bread, nine make a hay bale for compact storage and fall damage reduction, and wheat is the breeding item for cows, sheep, goats and mooshrooms — which makes it the input to the entire animal side of the food chain as well as the crop side. It is also what villagers buy: a farmer villager pays emeralds for wheat in bulk, which is usually a new base's first reliable income. Growth needs light level 9 and is much faster on hydrated farmland, and bone meal skips stages instantly. A single 9-by-9 plot keeps a base in bread indefinitely.
Bread and hay bales, breeding cows, sheep, goats and mooshrooms, and the bulk trade good that a farmer villager buys for emeralds — usually a new base's first income.
Wheat Crops counts as a plant block in Minecraft 1.21.4. A crafting table turns its ingredients into Wheat Crops. It breaks almost instantly, with a hardness of just 0.
You can break it by hand without losing the drop. Breaking it produces Wheat Seeds. Light passes through it, so it will not darken the space behind it.
It offers almost no protection from explosions (0 blast resistance). A full stack holds 64. It is crafted from Hay Bale.
Its main value is as a crafting ingredient: 4 recipes need it, Bread, Cake, Cookie and 1 more among them.
How to get it
Plant wheat seeds on farmland at light level 9 or higher. Seeds come from breaking tall grass at roughly a 1 in 8 chance per block, and a fully grown plant drops 1 wheat and 1 to 4 seeds.
Tips
- Harvest only fully grown wheat: the 8th stage looks brown and gold, and earlier stages give seeds alone.
- 9 wheat make a hay bale, which stores compactly and reduces fall damage by about 80 percent when landed on.
- Bone meal skips growth stages instantly, so a composter full of surplus seeds accelerates the whole farm.
- See automatic crop farms for observer-and-piston layouts that replant and harvest themselves.
How long it takes to break
Wheat Crops sits at hardness 0: 0 seconds per block with your fists, 0 with the correct netherite tool.
There is no tier requirement to worry about. Any tool, or none, returns the drop; the numbers below just say how fast.
Efficiency contributes its level squared plus one to tool speed, and on something this soft that reaches instant mining almost at once.

|---|---|---|---|
| Hand | instant | instant | instant |

Properties
Wheat Crops has a blast resistance of 0, so any explosion nearby destroys it. It lets light through and emits no light of its own. One inventory slot holds 64, the normal full stack. It is renewable, so a single world can supply an unlimited amount of it. The block is tagged for axes, and only that class gets the speed bonus; everything else mines at bare-hand rate. Broken normally it drops Wheat Seeds rather than itself; Silk Touch is what returns the block, and Fortune raises the ordinary drop instead.
