Bread

Bread

FoodHunger restored 5

Overview

Bread restores 5 hunger and 6 saturation from three wheat, and it is the food that carries almost every world through its first week. Wheat grows from seeds you get by breaking grass, needs only water and light, and a 9×9 field around one water source produces more bread than a single player can eat. Nothing else is that cheap that early. It also stacks to 64, cooks nothing, needs no furnace and no fuel, which matters on the first day when coal is still theoretical. Later on, bread stays useful for two reasons: it is the fastest food to mass-produce from an automatic wheat farm, and it is the item you throw to villagers to make them breed, which is how a trading hall gets populated. Compared with steak it restores less of both bars, so most players graduate to meat by the second week — but a chest of bread beside the farm is a habit that survives into the end game because it costs nothing to maintain. It is the quiet backbone of every early world, and it never quite stops being useful.

Feeding yourself from day one without a furnace, and feeding villagers so they breed — the cheapest renewable calories in the game. Nothing else is this cheap on day one.

As food, Bread is judged on two numbers: hunger restored and saturation. It gives back 5 hunger and 6 saturation. It stacks to 64.

Chest loot in Village can contain it. The recipe calls for Wheat. It is not used in any crafting recipe.

How to get it

Craft 1 from 3 Wheat. A 9×9 farm with a central water block yields around 80 wheat per harvest, which is roughly 26 bread per cycle with no fuel required.

Tips

  • Throw bread to two villagers with beds available and they will breed, which is how a trading hall is populated.
  • Bone meal from a composter speeds up the crop, and the composter takes the excess seeds you cannot plant.
  • Bread needs no cooking, so it is the only food that works before you have coal or a furnace.
  • An automatic crop farm with an observer and pistons harvests wheat while you are elsewhere.

Properties

Eating it restores 5 hunger and 6 saturation — a ratio of 1.2, which is what decides how long you stay full rather than how fast the bar refills. One inventory slot holds 64, so a double chest holds 3,456.

Found in

Bread is in the loot tables of Village.

  • Village — Villages generate in five architectural variants — plains, desert, savanna, taiga and snowy — each built from local materials with its own house shapes, and the variant is fixed by the biome of the village centre even if it sprawls across a border.

How it compares to other foods

Sorted by saturation ratio, Bread is 14 of 41 foods in the game. Ratio is saturation divided by hunger restored: it is what decides how long the hunger bar stays still, not how fast it refills.

Golden Carrot leads the list at a ratio of 2.4, and anything at or above 1.6 is worth carrying on a long trip.
