Overview
A bed does three separate jobs and every one of them matters. It skips the night, which removes the mob spawning window and resets the weather; it sets your respawn point, which is the difference between losing a mining trip and losing a world; and it is the highest single-hit damage source in the game against the ender dragon, because a bed placed in a dimension where it cannot be slept in explodes with roughly the force of a charged creeper. That last property is why every dragon fight involves a stack of beds and why placing one in the Nether kills unprepared players. Sleeping requires night or a thunderstorm, no hostile mob within 8 blocks, and — in multiplayer — enough of the server's players sleeping at once to pass the sleep threshold. Beds come in all 16 colours; the recipe is 3 wool of one colour plus 3 planks of any type, and a bed can be re-dyed by crafting it with a dye. Breaking a bed with any tool returns it whole, so it is safe to carry one everywhere.
Skipping the night and resetting weather, setting your respawn point anywhere in the Overworld, and — in the Nether and the End — acting as a portable explosive against the ender dragon.
White Bed counts as a functional block in Minecraft 1.21.4. A crafting table turns its ingredients into White Bed. It breaks almost instantly, with a hardness of just 0.2.
You can break it by hand without losing the drop. It is transparent, which matters when you are managing light levels. With a blast resistance of only 0.2 it will not survive an explosion.
It is unstackable. The recipe calls for White Wool and Oak Planks. It is not used in any crafting recipe.
About the white set
How to get it
Craft it from 3 wool of the same colour and 3 wooden planks of any type. Sheep give 1 to 3 wool per shearing and regrow their coats, so the only real cost is finding 1 sheep on your first day.
Tips
- Sleep sets your spawn only if the bed is unobstructed when you respawn; a blocked bed sends you to world spawn.
- Never place a bed in the Nether or the End: it explodes with roughly the force of a charged creeper.
- You cannot sleep with a hostile mob within 8 blocks, so light and wall the room before dark.
- Craft a bed with a dye to change its colour without wasting the wool — see how to make a bed.
Properties
Blast resistance on White Bed is 0.2, so any explosion nearby takes it out. It lets light pass and gives off no light. One inventory slot holds 1 — it does not stack at all. It catches easily (encouragement 60, burn 20), so keep lava and open flame well away from it and from anything next to it.
