A bed is 3 wool and 3 planks in a crafting table: wool across the middle row, planks across the bottom row. All three wool blocks must be the same colour; the planks can be any mix of wood types.
That is the recipe you want on day one. The other bed recipes — a white bed plus a dye, or wool of a colour you have already dyed — exist for decorating, and they are the ones a recipe list tends to show you first.
Getting the wool
There are two routes, and the second one is the reason a bed is never actually out of reach.
Shear a sheep. Shears are two iron ingots. A sheared sheep drops 1–3 wool and grows its coat back after it eats grass, so three sheep sheared once is usually a bed, and the same three sheep will supply the next one. Killing a sheep drops only 1 wool and ends the supply, so shear rather than kill unless you need the mutton.
Craft wool from string. Four string makes one white wool, so 12 string is a bed. String comes from spiders, and on a first night spent underground that is often the only wool you will see. It also means a cave spider spawner or any dark corner full of spiders is a bed factory.
If your sheep are the wrong colour, dye the sheep rather than the wool — a dyed sheep keeps producing that colour every time it regrows.
What a bed actually does
Three things, and only the first is obvious.
It skips the night. You can sleep between dusk and dawn, or at any time during a thunderstorm. Morning arrives instantly and the weather clears. On a multiplayer server a percentage of players must sleep, not all of them.
It sets your spawn point. This is the important one. Once you have slept in a bed — or been told there are monsters nearby, which still sets the spawn — dying returns you next to that bed instead of at the world spawn. Every base should have a bed in it for this reason alone, whether or not you ever sleep in it.
It stops phantoms. Phantoms begin spawning after three in-game days without sleep and keep coming until you rest. Sleeping resets that counter, so a bed is also a piece of defensive equipment. More on that in how to survive your first night.
When it refuses to let you sleep
Four messages, four causes:
| The game says | What is wrong |
|---|---|
| "You can only sleep at night" | It is daytime and there is no thunderstorm |
| "You may not rest now, there are monsters nearby" | A hostile mob is within roughly 8 blocks — including through a wall |
| "This bed is obstructed" | Something is sitting in the space the bed needs to put you |
| Nothing happens | You are too far away; stand next to the bed, not across the room |
The monsters message is the one that catches people out in a new base. It reads through walls and floors, so a zombie in the cave under your shelter counts. Seal the floor, or light the area properly — the walkthrough is in how to build a base that mobs cannot enter.
Beds explode outside the Overworld
Using a bed in the Nether or the End sets off an explosion roughly as strong as a charged creeper, centred on you. It is not a bug and there is no way around it — the dimensions have no night, so the game turns the bed into a trap instead.
This has one legitimate use: bed bombing. A bed detonated against a boss deals enormous damage, which is a real technique against the Wither if you have the obsidian to hide behind. Everywhere else in the Nether it is simply how new players die.
For a permanent spawn point in the Nether, use a respawn anchor charged with glowstone instead.
Colours
Sixteen bed colours exist. Two ways to get one:
- Craft the bed from wool that is already the right colour.
- Craft any bed, then combine it with one dye in the crafting grid. A bed can be recoloured this way as often as you like.
Colour has no effect on anything mechanical. It matters for a trading hall, where telling one villager's bed from another at a glance saves a great deal of time — see villager trading and how to get cheap Mending.
Frequently asked questions
What is the fastest bed on day one?
Three sheep and a pair of shears if you can see sheep; otherwise 12 string from spiders. Both are usually available before the first sunset if you spend the first ten minutes the way your first day in Minecraft suggests.
Can I use different plank types in one bed?
Yes. The bottom row accepts any mix of plank types. Only the wool has to match.
Does sleeping heal me?
No. Sleeping passes time; it does not restore health directly. What it does do is let natural regeneration run while nothing is attacking you, which amounts to the same thing if your hunger is high enough — see hunger and saturation explained.
Why did I respawn at the world spawn even though I have a bed?
Because the bed was broken, blocked, or the space beside it was occupied when you died. The game falls back to the world spawn silently. Keep the two blocks beside a bed clear, and do not mine the block under it.
Can I pick a bed back up?
Yes, with any tool or by hand — beds break instantly and drop themselves. Carrying one on a long expedition is standard practice, precisely because placing it moves your spawn point to wherever you are.
