What it is
The Nether is a hostile dimension of netherrack, lava and fire, reached through an obsidian portal. It has no day-night cycle, no weather, and no water — water placed here evaporates instantly.
A solid bedrock ceiling sits at Y 128, which is why the "nether roof" exists as a flat travel surface above the terrain.
Why players go there
Three reasons. First, travel: one block in the Nether equals eight in the Overworld, so a nether tunnel is the fastest transport in the game. Second, resources found nowhere else — ancient debris for netherite, blaze rods for brewing, nether quartz, wither skeleton skulls and glowstone. Third, the bastion and fortress loot tables.
Surviving it
Bring fire resistance potions, a shield, and never a bed — beds explode here. Piglins ignore you if you wear at least one piece of gold armour. Ghast fireballs can be deflected back with a well-timed hit.

Structures in The Nether
- Ruined Portal (Nether) — The Nether-side counterpart, generating on cliff faces, floors and ceilings throughout every Nether biome with the same crumbling obsidian frame and loot chest.
- Nether Fortress — A dark nether brick complex of corridors, staircases, balconies and long bridges over lava.
- Bastion Remnant — A ruined blackstone fortress in one of four layouts — bridge, hoglin stable, housing units and treasure room — each packed with piglins and, in the treasure variant, piglin brutes that ignore gold armour entirely.
- Nether Fossil — A large bone block skeleton protruding from the soul sand of a soul sand valley, resembling a fossilised ribcage or spine.
