Overview
Wind Charged is one of the four ominous effects that arrived with the trial chambers, and like the other three it is a death trigger rather than a buff. Whatever carries it releases a wind burst when it dies — the same shove a breeze's projectile or a wind charge produces, radiating outward and throwing every entity nearby away from the point of death. Inside an ominous trial chamber that is exactly the nuisance it sounds like: you finish a mob at the edge of a walkway and the burst launches you off it, or scatters the rest of the wave across the room just as you had them grouped. It does no damage on its own, which makes it the least lethal of the four and the most likely to kill you indirectly, via a drop you did not choose. Fight wind-charged mobs with a wall at your back and never on a ledge over a lava channel. The effect is also a useful demonstration of the 1.21 wind mechanics generally, since the same physics power the mace's Wind Burst enchantment and the breeze's attack — knockback that ignores your footing entirely.
As a hazard, it tells you where not to stand. Deliberately, a wind-charged mob killed beside a drop is a cheap way to launch a crowd of others off a ledge.
Releases a wind burst when you die, knocking back everything nearby.
Wind Charged is a harmful status effect. It has no potion form: it lasts exactly as long as its source keeps applying it.
While it is active the icon sits in the top-right of the inventory screen with the time remaining under it, and particles in the effect's own colour trail off you, fainter when the source is ambient — a beacon or a conduit. No beacon offers it, so every application has a fixed duration.
How to get it
Ominous trial spawners hand it to the mobs they produce, so it appears once you have converted a chamber with Trial Omen. /effect give @s minecraft:wind_charged 30 0 reproduces it for 30 seconds outside one.
Tips
- Kill wind-charged mobs with your back to a wall; the burst throws you, not just them.
- Never fight them on a walkway over a lava channel — the launch, not the damage, is what kills players here.
- The same physics drive Wind Burst on a mace, which is the version you actually want.
- A shield does not stop the shove, so reposition rather than blocking when the burst is coming.
Version notes
One of four ominous effects added in Java 1.21 with the trial chambers, alongside Oozing, Weaving and Infested.
What each level does
What the inventory calls level II is amplifier 1, because the amplifier counts from zero. Level by level:
You cannot reach past I legitimately, though a command will set it as high as 255.
| Level | Effect |
|---|---|
| I | a wind burst explodes from you when you die, knocking everything nearby away |
