Overview

Sparse jungle is the thinned-out edge of a jungle: the same jungle trees, vines and grass, but scattered widely enough that you can actually walk and see, with open grass between the trunks. It is the practical place to gather jungle resources, because everything the dense jungle has is here in smaller quantity and none of it costs you an hour of hacking through leaves. Jungle wood, vines, cocoa pods on the log sides and the occasional melon patch all generate here. Ocelots and parrots spawn, and since 1.20.5 wolves in sparse jungle carry the rusty coat variant — one of the eight regional coats introduced in that release, and one of only two that require a jungle biome. The open canopy also means the floor gets real daylight, so hostile mobs do not spawn under the trees during the day the way they do in a full jungle, which makes this a far more sensible place to build a base if you want jungle wood without the danger. The trade-off is volume: you will walk further for the same number of logs, and melons and cocoa are scattered rather than concentrated. Sparse jungle borders jungle, bamboo jungle, savanna and desert.

Jungle logs and saplings without fighting through dense undergrowth, cocoa pods on the log sides for brown dye, melon patches, ocelots and parrots, and the rusty-coated wolves that spawn only in jungle biomes.

Sparse Jungle is a warm biome that generates in the Overworld. Its base temperature of 0.95 places it in the warm band, which controls whether water freezes, whether it rains or snows, and which passive mobs are allowed to spawn there.

Weather reaches Sparse Jungle: it rains during storms, so crops grow and cauldrons fill on their own.

One generated structure can appear here, among them Jungle Pyramid.

3 mobs name Sparse Jungle specifically among their spawn biomes: Ocelot, Parrot, and Wolf.

Jungle biomes are the densest terrain in the game: tall trees, thick undergrowth, cocoa on the trunks, and enough leaf cover that the floor stays dark enough for hostile spawns during the day. Bamboo, melons and pandas are effectively jungle-only.

How to get it

Sparse jungle generates as the transition band around any jungle region, so find a jungle and follow its edge. It is often 100 to 300 blocks wide between the dense interior and the neighbouring dry biome.

Tips

  • Plant 4 jungle saplings in a 2x2 to grow the giant variant; a single sapling only produces a small tree.
  • Cocoa pods placed on any jungle log grow to full in 3 stages and drop 3 beans each, which is renewable brown dye.
  • Ocelots cannot be tamed — feed them raw cod to gain trust so they stop fleeing, then breed them for kittens.
  • This is the safest jungle biome to build in: the open canopy keeps the floor above light level 0 during the day.

Climate and generation

Sparse Jungle has a base temperature of 0.95, which puts it in the warm band. Temperature is not a thermometer reading — it is the single number that decides snow versus rain, whether water freezes over, and what colour the grass renders.

Above 0.15 water stays liquid and any precipitation falls as rain.

Mobs in Sparse Jungle

Ocelot, Parrot, and Wolf name Sparse Jungle specifically as a spawn biome, so this is where you go to find them.

On top of those, the mobs that spawn in open terrain anywhere in the Overworld can appear here too, given the right light level. Mobs that only come from a structure or a spawner — breezes from trial chambers, blazes from fortresses, evokers from mansions — are deliberately not in this list.

Also spawns throughout Overworld

Structures found here

One structure can generate in Sparse Jungle: Jungle Pyramid.

  • Jungle Pyramid — A mossy cobblestone temple buried in jungle canopy, and the only structure in the game built around an actual redstone puzzle.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find Sparse Jungle?

Sparse Jungle generates in the Overworld. A locate command finds the nearest one instantly; without cheats, exploring in one direction and watching the F3 screen's biome line is the reliable method.

What spawns in Sparse Jungle?

Ocelot, Parrot, and Wolf spawn here specifically, and the usual Overworld mobs can appear given the right light level.

Does it rain in Sparse Jungle?

Yes — as rain. Cauldrons fill on their own during a storm and farmland stays hydrated.
