Overview
Since 1.14 you cannot tame an Ocelot, and that single change is what most players get wrong about this mob. Feeding it raw cod or raw salmon repeatedly earns trust, not ownership: a trusting Ocelot stops fleeing from you and will stand nearby, but it never follows, never sits on command, never wears a collar, and cannot be led or teleported to you. If you want a pet, tame a Cat instead — the two are different mobs with different behaviour. What an Ocelot still does is scare things. Creepers and phantoms flee from it exactly as they flee from cats, which is why a jungle base with a few ocelots wandering through it takes fewer explosions than one without. It has 10 health, never attacks, and hunts nothing but chickens and baby turtles. Approaching is the hard part: sprinting, jumping or hitting one resets its trust and sends it bolting into the canopy, so crouch, stand still, and let it come to you with fish in hand. They spawn on grass or leaves in jungle, sparse jungle and bamboo jungle biomes above Y=63, at light level 9 or above, and drop nothing.

The Ocelot never attacks. The only reason to be careful around one is that killing it is often not what you want: breeding it is worth more than the drop.
