Overview

Snowy slopes is the steep snowfield between the grove at the treeline and the peaks above it, and it is where the game keeps most of its powder snow. Powder snow is the trap block: it looks exactly like a thick snow layer, you fall straight through it, and once inside you begin to freeze — the screen frosts over and you take 1 damage every 2 seconds regardless of armour. Leather boots, and only leather boots, let you walk on top of it. The same property makes it the best fall-damage cancel in the game, because landing in powder snow does no damage at all, and a bucket is the only way to pick it up and carry it. Goats spawn on snowy slopes as well as on the peaks, and a screaming goat, about 1 in 50, is the source of goat horns. Snow blocks and ice are everywhere for the taking. Because snowy slopes counts as a mountain biome, emerald ore generates in the stone beneath it. It borders grove below and jagged peaks, frozen peaks and stony peaks above.

Powder snow collected with a bucket for safe landings and freezing traps, goats and goat horns, snow and ice in bulk, and emerald ore in the mountain stone below.

Snowy Slopes sits in the freezing band of Minecraft's biome table, generating in the Overworld at a base temperature of -0.3.

Weather reaches Snowy Slopes: it snows rather than rains, and exposed water freezes into ice.

2 generated structures can appear here, among them Pillager Outpost and Igloo.

4 mobs name Snowy Slopes specifically among their spawn biomes: Goat, Polar Bear, Rabbit, and Stray.

Mountain biomes reach the highest terrain in the game. Emerald ore generates only here, goats and powder snow are mountain-exclusive, and the height means a fall is a more realistic threat than a mob.

How to get it

Snowy slopes generate on mountainsides above the treeline, typically between Y 130 and Y 190. Walk uphill out of a grove; the point where spruce trees stop and bare snow begins is the border.

Tips

  • Test snow ahead of you by walking, not sprinting — powder snow and a snow layer look identical until you are inside one.
  • Freezing damage ignores armour completely, so leather boots are the only real protection on this slope.
  • Carry 2 buckets for powder snow: 1 for a landing pad at the bottom of your build and 1 spare.
  • A goat ram sends you several blocks backwards, which on a slope this steep means a fall you will not survive.

Climate and generation

Snowy Slopes has a base temperature of -0.3, which puts it in the freezing band. Temperature is not a thermometer reading — it is the single number that decides snow versus rain, whether water freezes over, and what colour the grass renders.

Below 0.15 water freezes into ice on its own and precipitation falls as snow, so a base here needs light on any exposed water.

Mobs in Snowy Slopes

Goat, Polar Bear, Rabbit, and Stray name Snowy Slopes specifically as a spawn biome, so this is where you go to find them.

On top of those, the mobs that spawn in open terrain anywhere in the Overworld can appear here too, given the right light level. Mobs that only come from a structure or a spawner — breezes from trial chambers, blazes from fortresses, evokers from mansions — are deliberately not in this list.

Structures found here

2 structures can generate in Snowy Slopes: Pillager Outpost and Igloo.

  • Pillager Outpost — A dark oak watchtower flying an ominous banner, surrounded by tents, log piles, and often a cage holding an iron golem or, beneath the tower, cages containing allays.
  • Igloo — A small snow dome containing a bed, a crafting table, a furnace and a redstone torch on the floor.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find Snowy Slopes?

Snowy Slopes generates in the Overworld. A locate command finds the nearest one instantly; without cheats, exploring in one direction and watching the F3 screen's biome line is the reliable method.

What spawns in Snowy Slopes?

Goat, Polar Bear, Rabbit, and Stray spawn here specifically, and the usual Overworld mobs can appear given the right light level.

Does it rain in Snowy Slopes?

Yes — as snow, because the temperature is below the freezing threshold. Cauldrons fill on their own during a storm and farmland stays hydrated.
