Overview

Stony peaks is the warm-climate mountain summit: bare stone, gravel and patches of calcite rising above the treeline with no snow cap at all, because the biome generates where the surrounding temperature is too high for snow to settle. That makes it visually distinct from frozen and jagged peaks — grey and brown rock in full sun rather than a white cap — and functionally more convenient, because there is no ice underfoot and no powder snow to fall into. The exposed stone is the reason to come. Emerald ore generates here under the restricted mountain distribution, peaking around Y 236, and every other ore is visible in the open faces without tunnelling, with the mountain iron band peaking near Y 232. Calcite generates in patches on stony peaks, which is otherwise found mainly in amethyst geodes, and it is one of the few pure white natural building blocks. No goats spawn here, unlike the snowy peaks, and no mobs are biome-specific to it. The danger is entirely the drop. Stony peaks borders jagged peaks, meadow, grove, savanna and jungle at lower altitudes.

Emerald ore under the restricted mountain distribution, exposed surface iron near Y 232 that needs no tunnel, calcite in patches for white building blocks, and gravel for flint without any digging at all.

Stony Peaks sits in the warm band of Minecraft's biome table, generating in the Overworld at a base temperature of 1.

Weather reaches Stony Peaks: it rains during storms, so crops grow and cauldrons fill on their own.

2 mobs name Stony Peaks specifically among their spawn biomes: Goat and Silverfish.

Mountain biomes reach the highest terrain in the game. Emerald ore generates only here, goats and powder snow are mountain-exclusive, and the height means a fall is a more realistic threat than a mob.

How to get it

Stony peaks generate above roughly Y 160 in warm mountain regions, usually where a savanna or jungle rises into mountains. Climb any warm mountainside until the vegetation stops and bare stone begins.

Tips

  • Tunnel horizontally at Y 236 for emerald: it generates as single blocks, so cover distance rather than depth.
  • Calcite here is collected with any pickaxe and is one of only 2 natural pure-white blocks besides snow and quartz.
  • Bring a water bucket for the descent; a stony peak face can be a 120-block drop with no snow to land in.
  • Use the ore Y-level tool to plan which band to tunnel at before you climb.

Climate and generation

Stony Peaks has a base temperature of 1, which puts it in the warm band. Temperature is not a thermometer reading — it is the single number that decides snow versus rain, whether water freezes over, and what colour the grass renders.

Above 0.15 water stays liquid and any precipitation falls as rain.

Mobs in Stony Peaks

Goat and Silverfish name Stony Peaks specifically as a spawn biome, so this is where you go to find them.

On top of those, the mobs that spawn in open terrain anywhere in the Overworld can appear here too, given the right light level. Mobs that only come from a structure or a spawner — breezes from trial chambers, blazes from fortresses, evokers from mansions — are deliberately not in this list.

Does it rain in Stony Peaks?

Yes — as rain. Cauldrons fill on their own during a storm and farmland stays hydrated.
