Overview
Jagged peaks are the tallest and most vertical terrain Minecraft generates: bare stone spires capped with snow that routinely climb past Y 200 and can approach the build limit at Y 320. Unlike frozen peaks, the surface is exposed stone rather than packed ice, and that exposure is the point for a miner — ore veins of every kind sit visible in the cliff faces, and the mountain iron band peaks around Y 232, so a jagged peak is a place you can gather iron without going underground at all. The restricted emerald distribution applies here too, peaking near Y 236, which makes jagged peaks one of only ten biomes where emerald ore exists. Goats spawn on the ledges and will ram anything standing near a drop; a screaming goat, roughly one in fifty, drops a goat horn when its ram hits a solid block. The dangers are entirely gravitational. There is no water anywhere near the summit, falls run 100 blocks or more, and lightning strikes high ground preferentially in a storm. Jagged peaks border frozen peaks, stony peaks, snowy slopes and grove on the way down.
Surface iron and emerald without tunnelling, goat horns, snow and powder snow, and a vantage point that reveals the surrounding biomes for hundreds of blocks.
With a base temperature of -0.7, Jagged Peaks is one of the Overworld's freezing biomes, and that single number decides its weather, its water and much of its wildlife.
Weather reaches Jagged Peaks: it snows rather than rains, and exposed water freezes into ice.
3 mobs name Jagged Peaks specifically among their spawn biomes: Goat, Silverfish, and Stray.
Mountain biomes reach the highest terrain in the game. Emerald ore generates only here, goats and powder snow are mountain-exclusive, and the height means a fall is a more realistic threat than a mob.
How to get it
Jagged peaks generate at the summits of large mountain ranges. Climb from any snowy slopes or grove; iron peaks near Y 232 and emerald near Y 236, so the top 100 blocks are the productive part.
Tips
- Mine the mountain iron band from the outside face — above Y 200 the veins are exposed and need only a stone pickaxe.
- Carry a water bucket for descents: pouring water down a cliff face and riding it is faster and safer than digging.
- Emerald generates as isolated single blocks, so accept that a 20-block tunnel near Y 236 may yield only 2 or 3.
- Never fight a goat with a drop behind you; its ram knocks you back far enough to be fatal from this height.
Climate and generation
Jagged Peaks has a base temperature of -0.7, which puts it in the freezing band. Temperature is not a thermometer reading — it is the single number that decides snow versus rain, whether water freezes over, and what colour the grass renders.
Below 0.15 water freezes into ice on its own and precipitation falls as snow, so a base here needs light on any exposed water.
| Property | Value | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | -0.7 | Decides whether rain falls as snow, whether water freezes, and the grass and foliage tint. |
| Precipitation | Yes | Cauldrons fill on their own and farmland stays hydrated during a storm. |
| Dimension | Overworld | Sets which mobs, structures and ores can generate at all. |
| Grass and water tint | #859DFF | The colour the game applies to grass, leaves and water in this biome. |

Mobs in Jagged Peaks
Goat, Silverfish, and Stray name Jagged Peaks specifically as a spawn biome, so this is where you go to find them.
On top of those, the mobs that spawn in open terrain anywhere in the Overworld can appear here too, given the right light level. Mobs that only come from a structure or a spawner — breezes from trial chambers, blazes from fortresses, evokers from mansions — are deliberately not in this list.

Frequently asked questions
Where do I find Jagged Peaks?
Jagged Peaks generates in the Overworld. A locate command finds the nearest one instantly; without cheats, exploring in one direction and watching the F3 screen's biome line is the reliable method.
What spawns in Jagged Peaks?
Goat, Silverfish, and Stray spawn here specifically, and the usual Overworld mobs can appear given the right light level.
Does it rain in Jagged Peaks?
Yes — as snow, because the temperature is below the freezing threshold. Cauldrons fill on their own during a storm and farmland stays hydrated.
