Overview
Savanna is dry, flat-topped grassland with acacia trees, and its defining property is that it never rains. That has two consequences most players discover the hard way: fire spreads freely and will not be put out by weather, so a wooden build here can burn down completely, and farmland has to be hydrated by a water source you place yourself because rain will never do it. The terrain is otherwise excellent for building — broad, level, grass-covered and open, with the acacia's distinctive flat orange canopy on a diagonal trunk giving the only wood set that colour. Savanna villages generate here in their own architectural variant, built from acacia and cobblestone. Horses and sheep spawn in numbers, and this is one of the more reliable places to find them. Since 1.20.5 wolves that spawn on savanna plateau carry the spotted coat variant. The soil is grass rather than sand, so wheat, carrots and potatoes all grow fine as long as you provide water. Savanna borders plains, desert, jungle and badlands, and the acacia canopy against dry yellow grass makes the boundary obvious.
Acacia wood for its unique orange planks, savanna villages for trading, horses in quantity, and flat dry ground that needs no terraforming for a large build.
Savanna sits in the hot band of Minecraft's biome table, generating in the Overworld at a base temperature of 2.
No precipitation falls in Savanna. It never rains or snows here, so cauldrons stay empty and lightning does not strike.
2 generated structures can appear here, among them Village and Pillager Outpost.
3 mobs name Savanna specifically among their spawn biomes: Armadillo, Donkey, and Horse.
Savanna biomes are dry, flat-topped grassland with acacia trees. It never rains, so fire spreads unchecked and farmland has to be hydrated by hand, but the flat terrain and the acacia wood set make them a popular build site.
How to get it
Savanna is a common hot, dry biome and generally generates beside plains or desert. Acacia's flat orange canopies are recognisable from 200 blocks away, and villages inside it stand out against the pale grass.
Tips
- Keep torches and lava well away from acacia builds — with no rain, a fire here spreads until it runs out of fuel.
- Acacia trunks grow diagonally, so cut from the top or you will leave floating log segments 5 blocks up.
- Place water yourself for any farm: a single source block hydrates farmland 4 blocks in every direction.
- Savanna villages generate with more crop farms than most variants, which is free wheat, carrots and potatoes on arrival.
Climate and generation
Savanna has a base temperature of 2, which puts it in the hot band. Temperature is not a thermometer reading — it is the single number that decides snow versus rain, whether water freezes over, and what colour the grass renders.
Above 0.15 water stays liquid and any precipitation falls as rain.
| Property | Value | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | 2 | Decides whether rain falls as snow, whether water freezes, and the grass and foliage tint. |
| Precipitation | No | Nothing falls here, so a cauldron has to be filled by hand. |
| Dimension | Overworld | Sets which mobs, structures and ores can generate at all. |
| Grass and water tint | #6EB1FF | The colour the game applies to grass, leaves and water in this biome. |

Mobs in Savanna
Armadillo, Donkey, and Horse name Savanna specifically as a spawn biome, so this is where you go to find them.
On top of those, the mobs that spawn in open terrain anywhere in the Overworld can appear here too, given the right light level. Mobs that only come from a structure or a spawner — breezes from trial chambers, blazes from fortresses, evokers from mansions — are deliberately not in this list.

Structures found here
2 structures can generate in Savanna: Village and Pillager Outpost.
- Village — Villages generate in five architectural variants — plains, desert, savanna, taiga and snowy — each built from local materials with its own house shapes, and the variant is fixed by the biome of the village centre even if it sprawls across a border.
- Pillager Outpost — A dark oak watchtower flying an ominous banner, surrounded by tents, log piles, and often a cage holding an iron golem or, beneath the tower, cages containing allays.
