Overview
Windswept savanna is what happens when savanna terrain is put through the same erosion that produces windswept hills: acacia trees and dry yellow grass draped over wildly steep, jagged terrain with sudden spires, deep gullies and overhangs that hang out over nothing. It is one of the rarest biomes in the game and one of the most striking to look at, and it keeps every savanna rule — it never rains here either, so fire spreads unchecked and farmland must be watered by hand. The extreme terrain has two practical effects. First, stone is exposed everywhere, so ore veins and cave mouths are visible from the surface without tunnelling. Second, the biome is genuinely hazardous to cross: the drops are long, the ledges are narrow, and there is no water at the bottom of most of them. Horses and sheep spawn as they do in ordinary savanna. Villages do not generate in windswept savanna because the terrain will not accommodate them. It generates as a narrow band beside savanna and savanna plateau, usually at the boundary with a badlands or a mountain region.
Acacia wood for orange planks, exposed stone faces where ore veins sit visible from outside, some of the most dramatic terrain in the game for a build site, and horses and sheep as in ordinary savanna.
Windswept Savanna sits in the hot band of Minecraft's biome table, generating in the Overworld at a base temperature of 2.
No precipitation falls in Windswept Savanna. It never rains or snows here, so cauldrons stay empty and lightning does not strike.
3 mobs name Windswept Savanna specifically among their spawn biomes: Armadillo, Donkey, and Horse.
Savanna biomes are dry, flat-topped grassland with acacia trees. It never rains, so fire spreads unchecked and farmland has to be hydrated by hand, but the flat terrain and the acacia wood set make them a popular build site.
How to get it
Windswept savanna is rare and generates only at the edges of savanna regions, usually where they meet badlands or mountains. Look for acacia trees standing on impossibly steep terrain, visible from 300 blocks.
Tips
- Carry a water bucket at all times here — the ledges generate 40-block drops with no warning and no water below.
- The exposed stone means you can prospect for coal and iron on foot without digging a single shaft.
- It never rains, so keep fire at least 4 blocks from any acacia structure you build.
- Villages never generate in this biome, so plan to bring your own beds and job blocks.
Climate and generation
Windswept Savanna has a base temperature of 2, which puts it in the hot band. Temperature is not a thermometer reading — it is the single number that decides snow versus rain, whether water freezes over, and what colour the grass renders.
Above 0.15 water stays liquid and any precipitation falls as rain.
| Property | Value | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | 2 | Decides whether rain falls as snow, whether water freezes, and the grass and foliage tint. |
| Precipitation | No | Nothing falls here, so a cauldron has to be filled by hand. |
| Dimension | Overworld | Sets which mobs, structures and ores can generate at all. |
| Grass and water tint | #6EB1FF | The colour the game applies to grass, leaves and water in this biome. |

Mobs in Windswept Savanna
Armadillo, Donkey, and Horse name Windswept Savanna specifically as a spawn biome, so this is where you go to find them.
On top of those, the mobs that spawn in open terrain anywhere in the Overworld can appear here too, given the right light level. Mobs that only come from a structure or a spawner — breezes from trial chambers, blazes from fortresses, evokers from mansions — are deliberately not in this list.
