Overview

Gray Glazed Terracotta is one of the 16 variants of White Glazed Terracotta: same recipe, same hardness, same drops — only the look differs. The full write-up for the set is on the White Glazed Terracotta page.

Gray Glazed Terracotta counts as a coloured block in Minecraft 1.21.4. Hardness 1.4 puts it in the middle of the pack for mining speed. Mine it with a wooden pickaxe or better, or you get no drop at all.

Broken correctly, it drops itself. It offers almost no protection from explosions (1.4 blast resistance). A full stack holds 64.

It is smelted from Gray Terracotta. Nothing on the crafting grid is made from it.

How long it takes to break

At a hardness of 1.4, Gray Glazed Terracotta takes 7 seconds to punch out and 0.25 seconds with a netherite-tier tool of the correct class.

You are looking at 0.35 seconds on iron and 0.3 on diamond — the iron step is where the time actually falls.

It will break below wooden, and you will get nothing for it. That combination of time spent and drop lost is the classic mining mistake.

Efficiency adds its level squared plus one to the tool speed, so Efficiency V is about 2.5 times faster than the same tool unenchanted.

Properties

With 1.4 blast resistance Gray Glazed Terracotta goes down to any nearby explosion. It is fully opaque and produces no light. Stack size is 64 — the standard full stack. A pickaxe is fastest here; any other class mines it at bare-hand speed, because the bonus only applies to the class the block is tagged for.
