Overview
Brown Glazed Terracotta is one of the 16 variants of White Glazed Terracotta: same recipe, same hardness, same drops — only the look differs. The full write-up for the set is on the White Glazed Terracotta page.
Brown Glazed Terracotta counts as a coloured block in Minecraft 1.21.4. Hardness 1.4 puts it in the middle of the pack for mining speed. Mine it with a wooden pickaxe or better, or you get no drop at all.
Broken correctly, it drops itself. It offers almost no protection from explosions (1.4 blast resistance). A full stack holds 64.
It is smelted from Brown Terracotta. Nothing on the crafting grid is made from it.
About the brown set
How long it takes to break
Brown Glazed Terracotta has a hardness of 1.4. By hand that is 7 seconds per block; with the correct tool at netherite tier it is 0.25 seconds.
Iron manages 0.35 seconds and diamond 0.3, which makes iron the tier that changes how this block feels.
It will break below wooden, and you will get nothing for it. That combination of time spent and drop lost is the classic mining mistake.
Efficiency contributes its level squared plus one to tool speed, which makes Efficiency V roughly 2.5 times faster than the plain tool.
| Tool | No enchantment | Efficiency III | Efficiency V |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hand * | 7 s | 7 s | 7 s |
| Wooden | 1.1 s | 0.2 s | 0.1 s |
| Stone | 0.55 s | 0.15 s | 0.1 s |
| Iron | 0.35 s | 0.15 s | 0.1 s |
| Diamond | 0.3 s | 0.15 s | 0.1 s |
| Netherite | 0.25 s | 0.15 s | 0.1 s |
| Golden | 0.2 s | 0.1 s | 0.1 s |
Properties
With 1.4 blast resistance Brown Glazed Terracotta goes down to any nearby explosion. It is fully opaque and produces no light. A single slot takes 64, the usual full stack. The fastest tool for it is a pickaxe; any other kind of tool mines it no faster than a bare hand does, because the speed bonus only applies to the tool class the block is tagged for.
