Overview

Plains is flat, open, lightly wooded grassland, and it is the biome the game quietly assumes you will start in. Villages generate here more often than anywhere else, which means an early bed, a composter, a free crafting table and a set of villagers to trade with before you have mined anything. Horses and donkeys spawn in herds on plains and nowhere near as reliably elsewhere, so this is where most players get their first mount. Bee nests generate on the scattered oak trees at roughly 5 percent, the highest rate outside a meadow or flower forest. The ground is tall grass and flowers over grass blocks with no elevation to speak of, which makes it the easiest terrain in the game to build a large flat base or a farm on — and simultaneously the most dangerous to sleep on top of, because an open flat surface at night is an open spawning platform. Sunflower plains is a separate biome carrying the same terrain plus sunflowers. Plains borders forest, birch forest, savanna, desert, river and swamp, so it is a good hub to build a rail line from.

Villages for trading and beds, horses and donkeys for transport, bee nests for honeycomb, wheat seeds from the tall grass, and the flattest large-scale build site available without terraforming.

Plains sits in the warm band of Minecraft's biome table, generating in the Overworld at a base temperature of 0.8.

Weather reaches Plains: it rains during storms, so crops grow and cauldrons fill on their own.

2 generated structures can appear here, among them Village and Pillager Outpost.

3 mobs name Plains specifically among their spawn biomes: Bee, Donkey, and Horse.

How to get it

Plains is among the most common Overworld biomes and generates in temperate regions everywhere; most worlds put one within 300 blocks of spawn. Villages inside it are visible from a long way off across the flat ground.

Tips

  • Fence and light a village the day you find it: zombie sieges convert villagers, and a converted villager takes a splash potion to cure.
  • Break tall grass for seeds — a plains biome will fill a chest with wheat seeds in about 5 minutes of walking.
  • Iron golems spawn once several villagers have both slept and worked, and each drops 3 to 5 iron ingots.
  • Read villager trading and cheap Mending before you change any villager's job block.

Climate and generation

Plains has a base temperature of 0.8, which puts it in the warm band. Temperature is not a thermometer reading — it is the single number that decides snow versus rain, whether water freezes over, and what colour the grass renders.

Above 0.15 water stays liquid and any precipitation falls as rain.

Mobs in Plains

Bee, Donkey, and Horse name Plains specifically as a spawn biome, so this is where you go to find them.

On top of those, the mobs that spawn in open terrain anywhere in the Overworld can appear here too, given the right light level. Mobs that only come from a structure or a spawner — breezes from trial chambers, blazes from fortresses, evokers from mansions — are deliberately not in this list.

Structures found here

2 structures can generate in Plains: Village and Pillager Outpost.

  • Village — Villages generate in five architectural variants — plains, desert, savanna, taiga and snowy — each built from local materials with its own house shapes, and the variant is fixed by the biome of the village centre even if it sprawls across a border.
  • Pillager Outpost — A dark oak watchtower flying an ominous banner, surrounded by tents, log piles, and often a cage holding an iron golem or, beneath the tower, cages containing allays.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find Plains?

Plains generates in the Overworld. A locate command finds the nearest one instantly; without cheats, exploring in one direction and watching the F3 screen's biome line is the reliable method.

What spawns in Plains?

Bee, Donkey, and Horse spawn here specifically, and the usual Overworld mobs can appear given the right light level.

Does it rain in Plains?

Yes — as rain. Cauldrons fill on their own during a storm and farmland stays hydrated.
