White Concrete — Minecraft block

Overview

Concrete is the flattest, most saturated colour in Minecraft, and getting it involves a two-step process that surprises new players. Crafting 4 sand, 4 gravel and 1 dye gives 8 concrete powder, which is a gravity-affected block that behaves like sand — and concrete powder is not concrete. Place the powder next to or in water and it hardens instantly into the solid concrete block, which then has to be mined with a pickaxe. That water step is the whole trick, and the standard technique is to pour a single water source into a hole and drop powder in by the stack. The result is worth the effort: concrete is a completely uniform, noise-free colour, unlike wool's fabric texture or terracotta's mottling, which makes it the material of choice for anything modern, graphic or pixel-art shaped. All 16 dye colours exist, plus the extremely useful white and black at the ends of the range. Concrete has no special mechanical properties beyond being a full solid block with a hardness of 1.8, so it is purely a builder's material. It is also completely fireproof compared with wool, which makes it the safer choice for a large coloured build.

Flat, fully saturated colour with no texture noise — the standard material for modern builds, pixel art, colour coding and anything that needs a clean surface.

White Concrete counts as a coloured block in Minecraft 1.21.4. There is no way to craft it; you have to find it and mine it. Its hardness of 1.8 makes it a normal, unhurried block to mine.

Anything below a wooden pickaxe breaks it without leaving a drop. It drops as the same block you mined. With a blast resistance of only 1.8 it will not survive an explosion.

How to get it

Craft 8 concrete powder from 4 sand, 4 gravel and 1 dye, then place the powder in or beside water to harden it. The hardened block must then be mined with a pickaxe to collect it.

Tips

Concrete powder only hardens on contact with water; simply having it near rain will do it too.
Drop powder into a 1-block water source from above and it hardens as it falls, which is the fastest method.
The hardened block needs a pickaxe; break it with anything else and you get nothing at all.
Powder obeys gravity like sand, so never place it above a space you intend to stand in.

How long it takes to break

Hardness 1.8 puts White Concrete at 9 seconds a block bare-handed, or 0.3 seconds with the right tool at netherite tier.

An iron tool takes 0.45 seconds and a diamond one 0.35, so the jump that actually matters for this block is the one to iron.

Below wooden the block breaks and simply vanishes. Bring the right tier or leave it in the ground.

The Efficiency formula is level² + 1 added to tool speed — at V that is about 3 times the unenchanted rate.

Properties

With 1.8 blast resistance White Concrete goes down to any nearby explosion. It is fully opaque and produces no light. A single slot takes 64, the usual full stack. A pickaxe is the fastest choice here. A tool of the wrong class is no better than your fist — the speed bonus is tied to the block's own tool tag.
