Overview
A Lingering Potion leaves a cloud on the ground instead of applying its effect once. The cloud sits for around 30 seconds, shrinking as it goes, and anything that walks through it takes a quarter of the potion's duration each time — which makes lingering potions area denial rather than a burst effect. A lingering Harming cloud in a doorway is a trap; a lingering Regeneration cloud is a healing station your whole team can stand in; a lingering Slowness cloud in a corridor stops a raid in its tracks. The second and more common use is Tipped Arrows: 8 arrows plus one lingering potion gives 8 arrows carrying that effect, which is the only way to apply potions at range. Making one costs Dragon's Breath added to a splash potion, so every lingering potion is ultimately paid for with a trip to the End. That cost is why most players brew lingering potions specifically for arrows rather than for the clouds themselves. Even so, a single cloud placed well can decide a fight that armour alone would have lost, which is why they are worth brewing before a raid.
Leaving a standing effect cloud for area control, and — far more commonly — crafting the tipped arrows that apply potion effects at range. Both uses are worth the End trip.
In Minecraft, Lingering Potion is a brewing item. Every copy occupies a full inventory slot. It is not used in any crafting recipe.
How to get it
Add 1 Dragon's Breath to a Splash Potion at a brewing stand. Dragon's breath is bottled during the ender dragon fight, so bring 20 or more empty bottles to it.
