Overview
A Phantom Membrane repairs Elytra and brews the Potion of Slow Falling, and both jobs matter enormously to anyone who flies. Two membranes on an anvil restore a badly worn pair of wings, which is the standard maintenance for a flyer without Mending; and Slow Falling turns every descent into a controlled drift, cancels fall damage entirely, and is the safety net that makes Elytra travel over mountains reasonable rather than reckless. The irony is that membranes come from phantoms, and phantoms only appear when you have not slept for three in-game days — so the item that makes flying safe is a reward for the exact behaviour that makes the game dangerous. Phantoms drop 0 to 1 each and spawn in groups above open ground at night, which makes deliberately skipping sleep for a few days the standard farming method. Cats scare phantoms away, so a base with cats needs the farm somewhere else. Stack the membranes and keep two beside the Elytra in a labelled chest.
