Overview
A Splash Potion is a potion you throw, and that changes who it affects. Thrown at your own feet it applies to you instantly with no drinking animation, which matters in a fight where standing still for 1.6 seconds is how you die. Thrown at a teammate it heals them; thrown at a mob it damages or debuffs it; thrown at a zombie villager with Weakness, it starts the cure that turns the zombie into a discounted trader. The effect is strongest at the centre of the splash and weaker at the edges, so a direct hit matters. Making one is simply a matter of adding gunpowder to any brewed potion, so every potion in the game has a splash version, and the choice between drinking and throwing is usually about speed. Splash Water Bottles are the underrated case: they extinguish fire, damage endermen and blazes, and cost nothing but a bottle and gunpowder. Splash Healing on an undead mob damages it, which is the fastest way to clear a zombie crowd. Throwing is almost always faster than drinking, and speed is usually the point.
Applying an effect instantly and at range — to yourself mid-fight, to a teammate, or to a mob — with no drinking animation to stand still for.
In Minecraft, Splash Potion is a brewing item. Every copy occupies a full inventory slot. It is not used in any crafting recipe.
How to get it
Add 1 Gunpowder to any brewed potion at a Brewing Stand. One gunpowder converts all 3 bottles in the stand at once, so brewing in threes is again the efficient way.
Tips
- Throw at your own feet for an instant self-buff; the drinking animation is what gets people killed.
- Splash Healing damages zombies, skeletons and other undead, so it doubles as a crowd weapon.
- Splash Weakness on a zombie villager plus a golden apple begins a cure worth far more than the ingredients.
- Splash Water Bottles put out fire and hurt endermen and blazes for the cost of a bottle.
