Brewing in Minecraft

How the brewing stand works, what each ingredient does, and the full chain from a Water Bottle to any finished potion.

A brewing stand takes one fuel and up to three bottles at a time. Blaze Powder is the only fuel, and one powder covers 20 brewing operations — not 20 potions, since three bottles brewed together count as one operation. Each step takes about 20 seconds regardless of how many bottles are in the stand, so it is always worth filling all three slots.

Water Bottle: Right-click a water source, a cauldron or a water-filled block with a Glass Bottle. Awkward Potion: Brew a Water Bottle with Nether Wart. It has no effect of its own — it is the blank canvas almost every potion starts from.

Ingredients that create an effect

Added to an Awkward Potion, each of these produces one potion.

Ingredients that modify a potion

Added to a finished potion, these change what it does rather than what it is.

Redstone DustExtends the duration. Cannot be combined with Glowstone Dust.
Glowstone DustRaises the potion to level II, at the cost of duration.
GunpowderTurns a potion into a splash potion you throw. Effects last 75% as long.
Dragon's BreathTurns a splash potion into a lingering cloud. Effects last 25% as long per touch.
Fermented Spider EyeCorrupts a potion into its opposite — Swiftness becomes Slowness, Healing becomes Harming.

The full table of every potion with its duration is on the potions page, and the brewing planner shows the chain for any one of them step by step.
