Overview
A Fermented Spider Eye corrupts a potion into its opposite, and that one function is responsible for half the brewing tree. Add it to Night Vision and you get Invisibility; to Healing and you get Harming; to Swiftness and you get Slowness; to Poison and you get Harming again; to Leaping and you get Slowness; to a plain water bottle and you get Weakness, which is the potion that cures zombie villagers when combined with a golden apple. Nothing else in the game does this, so no brewing session is complete without a few in the ingredient chest. The recipe is one spider eye, one brown mushroom and one sugar, all of which are easy to farm — mushrooms grow in the dark on any block, sugar comes from sugar cane, and spider eyes drop from any spider a player kills. Splashed Weakness in particular is worth stockpiling: curing villagers is the cheapest route to discounted trades, and each cure needs one splash Weakness and one golden apple. Three cheap ingredients open half the brewing tree, which is the best return on a crafting recipe anywhere in the game.
Turning potions into their opposites — Invisibility, Harming, Slowness and Weakness all come from this one ingredient and nothing else. It is the single most important brewing ingredient.
Fermented Spider Eye is a brewing item in Minecraft 1.21.4. It stacks to 64. You make it with Spider Eye, Brown Mushroom, and Sugar.
No recipe takes it as an ingredient.
How to get it
Craft 1 from 1 Spider Eye, 1 brown mushroom and 1 Sugar. Brewing 1 into a water bottle makes Weakness, the potion needed to cure a zombie villager.
Tips
- Splash Weakness plus a golden apple cures a zombie villager, which is the cheapest path to good trades.
- Keep several in the brewing chest: the corrupted branch is the half of the tree most players actually use.
- Brown mushrooms grow in complete darkness on almost any block, so a small dark room supplies them forever.
- The potion brewing planner maps which base potion each corruption needs before you waste ingredients.
