Overview
A Spider Eye restores 2 hunger and 3.2 saturation and poisons you for 4 seconds, which is a bad trade for food and an excellent one for brewing. It is the base of the entire negative-potion branch: on its own with an awkward potion it brews a Potion of Poison, and fermented with a brown mushroom and sugar it becomes a Fermented Spider Eye, the ingredient that corrupts any potion into its opposite — Healing into Harming, Night Vision into Invisibility, Swiftness into Slowness. Nothing else in the brewing tree does that, so a stack of spider eyes is a prerequisite for half the potions worth making. Supply is easy: spiders and cave spiders drop 0 to 1 each, but only when killed by a player, and witches drop them freely. A spider spawner in a mineshaft is the classic farm, and it produces string and experience alongside the eyes. Eating one is only sensible in a genuine emergency, and even then, milk is the answer to the poison that follows. Keep a stack in the brewing chest and the corrupted branch is always available.
Brewing Potions of Poison and — once fermented with sugar and a brown mushroom — every corrupted potion in the game, from Harming to Invisibility to Slowness.
Spider Eye is a food item that restores hunger when eaten. One serving is worth 2 hunger and 3.2 saturation. The catch is that it gives you Poison for 4 seconds.
It stacks to 64. The usual source is Cave Spider, Spider, and Witch. The one thing it makes is Fermented Spider Eye.
How to get it
Spiders and cave spiders drop 0 to 1 when killed by a player, up to 3 with Looting III. Witches drop 0 to 6, which makes a witch farm the fastest bulk supply.
Tips
- Only player kills drop spider eyes, so a fall-damage spider farm needs you to land the final hit.
- Ferment eyes into Fermented Spider Eyes before a brewing session; the corrupted branch needs them.
- The 4 seconds of Poison from eating one cannot kill you outright, but it will take you to half a heart.
- The potion brewing planner shows which potions need eyes and which need fermented ones.
