Overview
Suspicious Stew restores 6 hunger and 7.2 saturation and hands you a status effect that depends entirely on which flower went into it. That makes it the only food in the game that is also a potion, and the only way to get certain effects without a brewing stand. An oxeye daisy gives Regeneration, a cornflower gives Jump Boost, a poppy or a torchflower gives Night Vision, a lily of the valley gives Poison and a wither rose gives the Wither effect — so the same recipe is either a meal, a buff or a trap, depending on what the cook chose. The effects are short, measured in seconds rather than minutes, which keeps it from replacing real potions. It does not stack, so carrying several means several slots. Beyond crafting, brown and red mooshrooms give suspicious stew when milked with a bowl, and the brown variety produces the stew matching whichever flower it was last fed — an infinite supply if you keep one penned. It also appears in shipwreck and camp loot. Ask what went into the bowl before you accept one.
Getting a short status effect without brewing — Regeneration, Jump Boost or Night Vision from a flower — or handing an unsuspecting player a bowl of Poison on a server.
As food, Suspicious Stew is judged on two numbers: hunger restored and saturation. It gives back 6 hunger and 7.2 saturation. It is not simply food, though: eating it also grants whichever effect the flower it was made from carries.
It is unstackable. Look for it in the loot of Shipwreck. It is crafted from Bowl, Brown Mushroom, Red Mushroom, and Allium.
Nothing on the crafting grid is made from it.
How to get it
Craft 1 from 1 Bowl, 1 brown mushroom, 1 red mushroom and any 1 flower. Milking a brown mooshroom with a bowl also produces 1 stew, with the effect set by the last flower it was fed.
Tips
- A penned brown mooshroom fed a chosen flower is an unlimited source of that exact stew, no crafting needed.
- Effects last seconds, not minutes; for anything sustained, brew a proper potion at a Brewing Stand.
- It does not stack, so plan on one inventory slot per bowl you intend to carry.
- Wither roses make a stew that damages the eater, which is why nobody accepts stew from strangers on a server.
Version notes
1.21.4's pale garden added the eyeblossom flowers, which extends the list of flowers that can be used in the recipe.
