Overview
1.21.4 is the version this encyclopedia documents, and it is the release that proved a winter drop could carry a genuinely new mood rather than just new blocks. The pale garden is the first biome in Minecraft built around absence: nothing ambient spawns in it, the usual biome sounds are gone, the grass and leaves are drained of colour, and the silence is the point. Into that Mojang put the Creaking, a mob that cannot be hurt while it is bound to a creaking heart and freezes solid whenever a player looks at it — so the fight is not a fight at all but a search, with one player holding the stare while another hunts for the pale oak trunk carrying the heart. Everything else in the drop supports that scene: pale oak as a full wood set, pale moss and pale hanging moss, eyeblossoms that open at night and close by day, and resin, which the creaking heart sheds as clumps you can craft into resin blocks and resin bricks. It is a small release by block count and a large one by atmosphere, and it remains the current stable target for servers and mods.
It gave players a biome to be unnerved by, a mob that cannot be brute-forced, a complete new wood palette in pale oak, and resin as a warm orange building material. For server owners it is the settled 1.21 branch endpoint rather than a mid-cycle patch.
The winter drop turned the dark forest into something genuinely unsettling. The pale garden is a grey, silent biome where no ambient mobs spawn and every pale oak might contain a creaking heart. The creaking itself is invulnerable and freezes whenever a player looks at it, so the only counter is finding and destroying its heart in a nearby trunk. The update also added a full pale oak building set and resin as a new decorative material.
How to get it
Java Edition 1.21.4 was released on 3 December 2024 and is the version every fact on this site is checked against. Select it in the launcher under Installations, or run the matching server jar; the dedicated server and the client must be on exactly the same release.
Tips
- The creaking hits for 3 on Normal, 2.5 on Easy and 4.5 on Hard, so it is not the damage that kills you — it is fighting the wrong thing.
- Do not try to kill a creaking directly. Follow the red tether to its creaking heart and break that with an axe instead.
- A creaking heart has hardness 10, the highest of any axe-mined block, so bring an efficient axe rather than a pickaxe.
- Pale gardens spawn no ambient mobs at all, so do not plan a base there expecting animals — bring your own breeding stock.

1.21.4 sits 1 of 28 in the release list this site covers and is the newest release covered and 1.21.3 before.
Worlds always upgrade forwards and never downgrade: a world opened in a newer version cannot be opened in an older one again, so back it up before the first launch on a new release.
