Overview

Seven personalities, rolled at birth, and each one genuinely changes what the animal does — that is what separates a Panda from every other passive mob. A lazy Panda lies on its back and refuses to move. A playful one rolls around constantly. A worried Panda shakes during thunderstorms and runs from everything. A weak Panda has half the usual health and sneezes often, and a baby that sneezes drops a slimeball, which is a genuinely useful renewable source away from swamps. The aggressive brown-eyed variant is the only one that fights back, hitting for 6 on Normal if you strike it. Normal adults carry 20 health and ignore you entirely. Bamboo governs everything else: pandas eat it off the ground, are led by it, and will only breed when there are at least 8 bamboo blocks within a few blocks of the pair, which means a bamboo patch is a prerequisite rather than a nicety. They are rare even inside bamboo jungles, spawning alone or in pairs at light level 9 or above, so bring leads. Killing one gives 1 bamboo and 1 to 3 experience, which is not a reason to do it.

Slimeballs without a swamp. A sneezing baby Panda drops one, which makes a breeding pen a renewable slime source, and the personality system makes them the most characterful animal to keep.

Pandas roll one of seven personalities at birth, and the personality actually changes behaviour: a lazy panda lies on its back and refuses to move, a playful one rolls constantly, a weak one has half health and sneezes often, and an aggressive brown-eyed panda will attack if you hit it. They eat bamboo from the ground, breed only near at least eight bamboo blocks, and are otherwise harmless.

In Minecraft, Panda is classified as a neutral mob. It has 20 health points, or 10 hearts. On Normal difficulty each hit costs you 6 damage.

It is worth 3 XP.

Properties

Panda has 20 health, which is 10 hearts. It drops up to 3 experience when a player kills it. Its hitbox is 1.3 blocks wide and 1.25 tall, which is what decides whether it fits through a gap or a one-block-high opening.

Damage by difficulty

Panda hits for 4 on Easy, 6 on Normal and 9 on Hard — the site's stat strip shows the Normal figure, which is the one most guides quote.

A full set of diamond armour cuts that by up to 80% against a small hit and less against a large one, and Protection IV on all four pieces — 16 EPF — takes a further 64% off what is left.

Rare even in bamboo jungles, where they spawn alone or in pairs.

It is restricted to Bamboo Jungle and Jungle, so it will never turn up outside those biomes however dark it gets.

Drops

Killing Panda drops Bamboo and Slimeball, plus up to 3 experience. Looting raises the maximum on most of these by one per level.

  • Bamboo: 1
  • Slimeball: 1 — Not a death drop. Baby pandas occasionally sneeze and drop a slimeball.

How it behaves

The Panda ignores you until provoked, and once provoked it usually stays provoked — often for the whole group, which is what makes a single mistake expensive.

Killed by a player it drops up to 3 experience; killed any other way it drops none.

Command

In a world with cheats on, this spawns one Panda where you are standing.

Frequently asked questions

How many panda personalities are there?

Seven — normal, lazy, worried, playful, weak, brown and aggressive — rolled at birth and visible in behaviour.

How do you get a slimeball from a Panda?

Wait for a baby Panda to sneeze. Each sneeze has a small chance of dropping one; adults never drop slimeballs.

What do pandas eat?

Bamboo, which also leads them and is the breeding item. At least 8 bamboo blocks must be nearby to breed.

Are pandas hostile?

Only the aggressive brown-eyed variant, and only if you hit it first. It deals 6 damage on Normal.

How much health does the Panda have in Minecraft?

The Panda has 20 health points, which is 10 hearts.

What does the Panda drop?

It drops Bamboo and Slimeball, plus 3 experience when killed by a player.

Where does the Panda spawn?

Rare even in bamboo jungles, where they spawn alone or in pairs.

How much damage does Panda do?

6 on Normal difficulty — 3 hearts — with 4 on Easy and 9 on Hard.

How to get it

Pandas spawn alone or in pairs in bamboo jungle and jungle biomes at light level 9 or above, and are rare even there. Breed 2 adults with bamboo, with at least 8 bamboo blocks nearby, or the pair will refuse.

Tips

  • Plant at least 8 bamboo blocks beside the pen, because pandas will not breed without bamboo close by.
  • Keep babies around: only a sneezing baby Panda drops a slimeball, and adults never do.
  • Lead them home rather than searching twice — pandas are rare even in bamboo jungles and spawn alone.
  • Avoid hitting the brown-eyed aggressive variant, which retaliates for 6 damage on Normal difficulty.
