Overview
A Minecart plus a line of rails is the game's oldest transport system and still the one that works while you are doing something else. Ride one and it rolls under gravity and momentum, topping out around 8 blocks per second on powered rails, which is slower than a horse in the open but perfectly steady through a tunnel, up a slope, or across a lava field where nothing else is safe. The point of rails, though, is not speed — it is that carts run without you. A minecart on a detector rail triggers redstone, a cart on an activator rail loads or unloads itself, and a cart parked on a powered rail waits until the rail turns on. Five iron ingots per cart is the whole cost, and rails come from iron plus a stick with powered rails needing gold and redstone, so a serious line is an iron project. In practice most players use minecarts for the jobs a boat cannot do: hauling goods out of a deep mine, moving between base levels, and — with a Hopper Minecart — collecting drops under a farm floor.
Moving yourself or goods along a fixed route without steering — mine haulage, base-to-base links, and the mechanical base of most redstone transport contraptions. Rails run whether or not you are watching.
Minecart is a transport item in Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.4. It is unstackable. The recipe calls for Iron Ingot.
It is an ingredient in 4 recipes, among them Minecart with Chest, Minecart with Furnace, Minecart with Hopper and 1 more.
How to get it
Craft 1 from 5 Iron Ingots. Ordinary rails cost 6 iron and 1 stick for 16, and powered rails cost 6 gold, 1 stick and 1 redstone for 6, so plan the gold before the track.
Tips
- Place a powered rail every 8 blocks on flat ground and every 2 or 3 on an incline to keep a loaded cart moving.
- A minecart on a slope will roll back and forth forever; end every line with a block or the cart escapes the track.
- Riding a minecart into a nether portal carries the cart through with you, which is how cross-dimension rail lines work.
- Boats on blue ice beat rails for straight-line speed, so save rails for routes that turn, climb, or run automatically.

Frequently asked questions
How do you make Minecart in Minecraft?
Minecart is crafted from Iron Ingot.
What is the stack size of Minecart?
Minecart does not stack at all. Every one you carry takes an inventory slot of its own, which is the practical limit on how many you take on a trip.
