Overview
A Chest Minecart is 27 storage slots that travel on rails, and it is the backbone of any mine that produces more than one trip's worth of stone. Load it at the working face, push it onto the line, and it delivers itself to a hopper at the other end — which, combined with a detector rail and a powered rail, is a fully automatic haulage system with no player involvement beyond filling it. Unlike a chest, it can be pushed, ridden into a portal, and parked anywhere, and unlike a shulker box it costs no shells. Break it and both the cart and the contents drop as items rather than being lost, so a derailment is annoying rather than catastrophic. The usual pattern is a hopper under the unloading rail: the cart stops on a powered rail set to off, the hopper drains it into a chest at 2.5 items per second, and a detector rail restarts the cart when it is empty. It is also, less romantically, the cheapest way to store 27 stacks in a spot where a chest cannot open because of a block above it.
Hauling ore and stone out of a mine automatically, moving bulk goods between bases on a rail line, and storing items in tight spaces where a normal chest could not be opened.

Tips
- A hopper under the track empties a chest minecart at 2.5 items per second without you having to open it.
- Never break a loaded cart over lava — the cart and every stack inside it drop as items and burn together.
- Use a powered rail switched off as a station brake, and a detector rail to send the cart on once loading finishes.
