Overview
A Hopper Minecart collects items from the block layer above it while it moves, and it does something an ordinary hopper cannot: it picks up items through a solid block. That single property is why almost every large farm built in the last decade has one running under the floor. Lay a rail beneath a collection surface, run a hopper cart along it in a loop, and everything that falls onto that floor is swept up regardless of the block in between, then delivered to a chest wherever a hopper under the track drains it. It holds five slots like a static hopper, pulls items 4.5 times faster than a hopper chain does when moving, and needs no redstone at all beyond the powered rails that keep it circulating. The cost is one hopper and one minecart — 5 iron for the cart and 5 iron plus a chest for the hopper — which is cheap for what it replaces. Its one weakness is that a full cart stops collecting, so a farm running overnight needs the unloading hopper to keep up with the input.
