Overview

The Void is a technical biome rather than a place you travel to: it is what the game uses for the empty space where no other biome is defined. In a normal survival world you meet it in the End, in the gap between the central island and the outer ring, where the gateway flight crosses hundreds of blocks of nothing. It is also the biome of the Void superflat preset, and it is what fills the space outside a generated region in certain world-generation configurations. Nothing generates in it — no terrain, no structures, no mobs, no light — and its only mechanical property is the one that gives it its name: falling below the bottom of the world in the Void deals 4 damage every half second regardless of armour, Resistance or the Totem of Undying, and there is no way to survive it or recover the items you were carrying. The biome exists in the registry because Minecraft's world generation must return a biome for every position, including positions with nothing in them. If you are reading this page after seeing the name on a debug screen, that is why.

Nothing is gathered here. The biome is a world-generation placeholder, and its practical relevance is the void damage that applies below Y -64 in the Overworld and below the islands in the End.

The Void sits in the temperate band of Minecraft's biome table, generating in the Overworld at a base temperature of 0.5.

No precipitation falls in The Void. It never rains or snows here, so cauldrons stay empty and lightning does not strike.

Nothing spawns naturally in The Void. That is the biome's defining property rather than a gap in the data — it is the only place in the Overworld where the darkness is genuinely empty, and it is what makes the sculk sensors and shriekers here the real threat.

This biome does not belong to any of the game's standard climate families — its generation rules are its own.

How to get it

You cannot travel to the Void deliberately in survival. It appears on the F3 debug screen in the empty regions of the End and in worlds created with the Void superflat preset, which starts you on a single 3x3 platform.

Tips

  • Void damage is 4 points every half second and ignores armour, Resistance, Fire Resistance and totems entirely.
  • Items that fall into the void are destroyed after 6 seconds, so nothing dropped there can ever be recovered.
  • In the End, always bridge or fly with a solid landing point in sight; a fall here costs the whole inventory.
  • The Void superflat preset gives you 1 small platform and nothing else, which is why it is used for skyblock-style maps.

Climate and generation

The Void has a base temperature of 0.5, which puts it in the temperate band. Temperature is not a thermometer reading — it is the single number that decides snow versus rain, whether water freezes over, and what colour the grass renders.

Above 0.15 water stays liquid and any precipitation falls as rain.

Mobs in The Void

No mob spawns naturally in The Void. Hostile mobs cannot generate here at all, which means the only things you will meet are what wandered in from a neighbouring biome or what a spawner produces.

Where do I find The Void?

The Void generates in the Overworld. A locate command finds the nearest one instantly; without cheats, exploring in one direction and watching the F3 screen's biome line is the reliable method.

What spawns in The Void?

Nothing. The Void has no natural mob spawns of any kind.

Does it rain in The Void?

No. Precipitation does not occur here at all.
