Overview
Point releases rarely change how a structure plays, and 1.16.2 is the exception that proves the rule. The Nether Update had shipped Bastion Remnants two months earlier with a loophole everyone had found: wear one piece of gold armour and piglins ignore you, so a player in a gold helmet could walk a bastion end to end and empty its chests with almost no resistance. The Piglin Brute closed it. Brutes are always hostile regardless of what you are wearing, carry a golden axe, hit for roughly thirteen on Normal, and cannot be pacified, traded with or bartered into indifference. They generate in the treasure-room bastion variant in particular, which is exactly where the ancient debris and netherite sit, so the Ancient Debris that is the richest loot in the Nether stopped being free. The same release did something quieter and arguably larger: it exposed custom biome and world generation to data packs. Every custom-terrain data pack and every world generation mod written since dates from this version rather than 1.16, which is why 1.16.2 shows up in compatibility notes far more often than a point release normally would.
It made bastion remnants a genuine fight rather than a walk-through, by adding a guard that ignores gold armour entirely. For technical players it opened custom biomes and world generation to data packs, which is the foundation of every terrain pack written since.
A point release two months after the Nether Update, and the only one of the 1.16 patches that added a mob. Bastion remnants had been survivable by anyone wearing a piece of gold; the piglin brute removed that loophole, because it attacks on sight whatever you are wearing and hits for roughly thirteen on Normal. The same release opened world generation to data packs, which is why custom-biome packs date from 1.16.2 rather than 1.16.
How to get it
Java Edition 1.16.2 was released on 11 August 2020, roughly 2 months after 1.16. It is the point release to choose on the 1.16 branch, because everything after it inherits both the piglin brute and the data pack world generation support.
Tips
- Gold armour no longer makes a bastion safe: piglin brutes attack on sight whatever you wear, and hit for about 13 on Normal.
- Bring a shield to the treasure-room bastion variant, and read ancient debris and netherite before you go for the ingots.
- Custom biome data packs need 1.16.2 or later — they simply do not load on 1.16 or 1.16.1.
- Brutes cannot be bartered with, distracted by gold or calmed in any way, so plan to fight or to avoid them entirely.

Frequently asked questions
What did 1.16.2 add?
The piglin brute, and data pack access to custom biomes and world generation. It is the only 1.16 point release that added a mob.
Does gold armour work on piglin brutes?
No. Brutes ignore gold entirely and are hostile on sight, which is precisely why they were added — ordinary piglins had made bastions too easy. See nether travel and survival for the rest of the trip.
Why do custom world generation packs require 1.16.2?
Because that release was the first to expose biome and world generation settings to data packs. Earlier 1.16 builds have no such hooks.
