Armadillo Scute

Armadillo Scute

Miscellaneous

Overview

An Armadillo Scute is the material for Wolf Armor, and it is collected without hurting anything — which makes it one of the friendlier farming loops in the game. Armadillos shed a scute roughly every 5 to 10 minutes on their own, and brushing one with a Brush makes it drop one immediately, so a small pen of two or three armadillos supplies armour and repairs for a whole pack of dogs. Six scutes make a set of Wolf Armor; using a single scute on an armoured wolf repairs part of the armour in place without removing it, which is the mechanic that makes the armour sustainable rather than disposable. Armadillos live in savanna biomes and in badlands, roll into a ball when a player sprints at them or an undead mob approaches, and breed on spider eyes — which is a slightly grim detail for such an amiable animal. They were added in 1.20.5, and 1.21's wolf variants gave the armour considerably more to work with. A pen of three keeps a whole pack of dogs armoured indefinitely, and shears take a set back off a wolf without destroying it, so one set can move between dogs as the pack changes.

Crafting and repairing Wolf Armor, which is the only way to keep a tamed wolf alive in a real fight. Collected without harming a single animal.

Armadillo Scute is a miscellaneous item in Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.4. Sixty-four fit in one inventory slot. You get it by killing Armadillo.

Its only crafting use is Wolf Armor.

How to get it

Brush an armadillo with a Brush for an immediate scute, or wait — each sheds 1 every 5 to 10 minutes. 6 scutes make one set of Wolf Armor.

Tips

  • Brushing does not hurt the armadillo, so a penned pair is a permanent, guilt-free supply.
  • Breed armadillos with Spider Eyes; they are the only food armadillos accept.
  • Use a scute directly on an armoured wolf to repair the armour without taking it off.
  • Armadillos roll into a ball when you sprint at them, so walk when approaching to brush one.

Version notes

Armadillos and scutes arrived in 1.20.5, and the item was renamed from the older turtle-based scute at the same time to keep the two distinct.
