Overview
A Bamboo Raft is bamboo's answer to a boat: identical speed, identical handling, identical crafting cost, and a completely different model — a flat platform with no seat back, because bamboo has no planks that look like a hull. It exists because bamboo was given a full wood set in 1.20 without being a tree, and Mojang chose to make its watercraft visually distinct rather than pretend bamboo bends like oak. Functionally there is nothing to weigh up: it moves at about 8 blocks per second on water, flies on blue ice, protects its rider from fall damage and seats two, exactly as every other boat does. What makes it worth knowing about is supply. Bamboo grows up to 16 blocks tall, spreads on its own in a jungle, and a single automatic bamboo farm produces thousands of stalks an hour — so rafts are the only boat you can genuinely mass-produce without cutting down forests. Players building long ice highways or repeated ocean trips tend to switch to rafts for that reason alone, and the chest raft variant carries 27 slots the same way a chest boat does.
The same job as any boat — water and ice travel, moving a passenger, safe descents — but from a renewable crop that regrows in minutes rather than from felled trees.
In Minecraft, Bamboo Raft is a miscellaneous item. Every copy occupies a full inventory slot. It is crafted from Bamboo Planks.
It goes into exactly one recipe: Bamboo Raft with Chest.
About the bamboo set
How to get it
Craft 1 from 5 Bamboo Planks, which come 2 at a time from a bamboo block, and a bamboo block is 9 bamboo. A bamboo farm regrows a full stalk in a few minutes, so 1 farm supplies rafts indefinitely.
Tips
- Bamboo grows to 16 blocks and can be farmed with a piston and an observer, making rafts effectively free in bulk.
- The raft handles identically to a boat despite the flat model, so there is no speed penalty for the different look.
- Use the Bamboo Chest Raft when you want 27 storage slots on a long water trip.
- Bamboo planks make a pale, striped floor as well, so an ocean base and its rafts can be built from one farm.
Version notes
Bamboo planks, the raft and the chest raft were added in 1.20, which gave bamboo a complete wood set including a mosaic block found nowhere else.

In a furnace it burns for 60 seconds, which smelts 6 items. Bamboo Raft does not stack — each one occupies an inventory slot of its own.

Frequently asked questions
How do you make Bamboo Raft in Minecraft?
Bamboo Raft is crafted from Bamboo Planks.
What is the stack size of Bamboo Raft?
Bamboo Raft does not stack at all. Every one you carry takes an inventory slot of its own, which is the practical limit on how many you take on a trip.
