Pointed dripstone is the spike block of dripstone caves, and it is the only block in the game that can kill you by being mined. A stalactite — a spike hanging from a ceiling — falls the moment the block supporting it is broken, and it deals damage scaled to the distance it fell, which for a long spike in a tall cavern comfortably exceeds a full health bar. A stalagmite, the same block pointing up from the floor, deals damage to anything that lands on it and roughly doubles fall damage. Both are placed by hand and both grow on their own over time when water drips through a dripstone block above them. The productive use is dripping. A stalactite hanging from a dripstone block with a water source above it drips water, and a cauldron underneath slowly fills; with a lava source above it drips lava instead, and a lava cauldron under a dripstone tip is the only renewable lava in Java Edition, refilling roughly every 20 minutes. That single mechanic turns a dripstone farm into infinite furnace fuel.

Pointed Dripstone is a stone-family block in Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.4. It is gathered by mining rather than crafted. At a hardness of 1.5 it takes a moment to break but never slows a build down.

How to get it
Mine it with any pickaxe in dripstone caves, which generate at any depth in the Overworld. It also grows on its own beneath a dripstone block with water above it, extending 1 block at a time.
Tips
- Never mine the block above a stalactite while standing under it — a long spike deals well over 20 damage.
- A lava source above a dripstone block and a stalactite drips into a cauldron every 20 minutes or so: renewable lava.
- Landing on a stalagmite roughly doubles fall damage, which makes a floor of them a lethal trap.
- Water above a dripstone block grows more pointed dripstone downward, so the farm expands itself.
