Overview
A dripstone block is the solid rough brown stone that dripstone caves are made of, and it does two jobs. As a building material it is a warm mid-brown with a coarse texture that sits usefully between terracotta and stone, and it comes in enormous quantities in any dripstone cave, so it is cheap to build with at scale. As a mechanism it is the required intermediary in the dripstone farming setup: a cauldron fills only when a pointed dripstone stalactite hangs beneath a dripstone block, with a water or lava source in the block above that. Miss the dripstone block out and nothing drips. That is the whole of its mechanical relevance, and it is the reason a farm design will specify it rather than any convenient stone. It is also the crafting source of pointed dripstone: 4 pointed dripstone craft into 1 dripstone block, and the block does not craft back, so gather the pointed variety directly rather than converting. It has a hardness of 1.5, the same as stone, so it mines quickly with any pickaxe. Endermen cannot pick it up, so a dripstone build stays as you left it.
The required block between a liquid source and a dripping stalactite in a cauldron farm, and a coarse brown building stone available in bulk from any dripstone cave.
Minecraft classifies Dripstone Block as a stone-family block. Dripstone Block has a crafting recipe, so it is renewable as long as you can source its ingredients. At a hardness of 1.5 it takes a moment to break but never slows a build down.
It needs at least a wooden pickaxe to drop anything; a weaker tool destroys it for nothing. Mining it returns the block itself, so it is safe to relocate. A blast resistance of 1 means a single creeper will clear it away.
It stacks to 64. You make it with Pointed Dripstone. No recipe takes it as an ingredient.
How to get it
Mine it with any pickaxe throughout dripstone caves, which generate at any Overworld depth and are most productive around Y 48 where copper also peaks. 4 pointed dripstone also craft into 1 block.
Tips
- A cauldron fills only if the stalactite hangs from a dripstone block with the liquid source directly above it.
- It mines at stone speed with any pickaxe, so gathering a few stacks takes minutes rather than an evening.
- 4 pointed dripstone craft into 1 block, but the recipe does not reverse — collect spikes directly.
- Pair it with copper mining: dripstone caves around Y 48 are the best copper source in the game.
How long it takes to break
At a hardness of 1.5, Dripstone Block takes 7.5 seconds to punch out and 0.25 seconds with a netherite-tier tool of the correct class.
Iron takes 0.4 seconds against diamond's 0.3, so the upgrade worth making for this block is the one to diamond.
The block still breaks with a weaker tool, but below wooden it yields nothing at all — the time is spent and the drop is lost, which is the single most common way players waste a vein.
Each Efficiency level adds level² + 1 to the tool's speed, so a level V tool clears this about 2.5 times faster than an unenchanted one.
| Tool | No enchantment | Efficiency III | Efficiency V |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hand * | 7.5 s | 7.5 s | 7.5 s |
| Wooden | 1.2 s | 0.2 s | 0.1 s |
| Stone | 0.6 s | 0.2 s | 0.1 s |
| Iron | 0.4 s | 0.15 s | 0.1 s |
| Diamond | 0.3 s | 0.15 s | 0.1 s |
| Netherite | 0.25 s | 0.15 s | 0.1 s |
| Golden | 0.2 s | 0.15 s | 0.1 s |
Properties
Dripstone Block resists blasts at 1, which is not enough to survive anything explosive nearby. Light does not pass through it, and it emits none of its own. A single slot takes 64, the usual full stack. Being non-renewable, every one in the world is finite. A pickaxe is fastest here; any other class mines it at bare-hand speed, because the bonus only applies to the class the block is tagged for.
