Overview

Ocean is the plain temperate ocean, the default water biome, and the one that covers the largest single share of most worlds. The floor sits around 15 blocks below sea level with sand, gravel, dirt and clay patches, seagrass and kelp forests growing up from it, and cold-variant ocean ruins scattered across it. Cod, squid and salmon near river mouths make it a reliable early food source with nothing more than a fishing rod, and fishing in open water also produces enchanted books, name tags and saddles from the treasure table. Shipwrecks generate on the floor and in shallows, each with up to 3 chests: a supply chest with food and useful blocks, a treasure chest with iron, gold and emeralds, and a map chest that holds the buried treasure map pointing at a beach nearby. Drowned spawn throughout and are the only source of the trident and the nautilus shell. Kelp is the sleeper resource here — dried and crafted into blocks it burns for 200 seconds per block, making it one of the best renewable fuels available. Ocean borders beaches, rivers, deep ocean and the warm and cold variants either side.

Kelp for fuel and food, cod and salmon for eating, shipwrecks for buried treasure maps, clay from the floor, and drowned for tridents and nautilus shells for a conduit.

Ocean is a temperate biome that generates in the Overworld. Its base temperature of 0.5 places it in the temperate band, which controls whether water freezes, whether it rains or snows, and which passive mobs are allowed to spawn there.

Weather reaches Ocean: it rains during storms, so crops grow and cauldrons fill on their own.

3 generated structures can appear here, among them Ocean Ruins, Shipwreck, and Buried Treasure.

3 mobs name Ocean specifically among their spawn biomes: Cod, Dolphin, and Drowned.

Ocean biomes vary by temperature: warm oceans carry coral and tropical fish, cold and frozen ones do not. Every ocean can hold a shipwreck, a ruin or buried treasure, and the deep variants are where ocean monuments generate.

How to get it

Follow any river downstream or any beach outward. Ocean is the most common water biome and generates on every coastline; a boat covers roughly 8 blocks per second in open water.

Tips

  • Craft 9 dried kelp into a dried kelp block: it smelts 20 items, which beats coal per unit of farm space.
  • Always open the shipwreck's map chest first — the buried treasure map is what leads to the heart of the sea.
  • Fish in open water with at least a 5x4 area of water and no blocks above you or the treasure table will not roll.
  • Place a door on the sea floor to make an air pocket if you are diving without a Water Breathing potion.

Climate and generation

Ocean has a base temperature of 0.5, which puts it in the temperate band. Temperature is not a thermometer reading — it is the single number that decides snow versus rain, whether water freezes over, and what colour the grass renders.

Above 0.15 water stays liquid and any precipitation falls as rain.

Mobs in Ocean

Cod, Dolphin, and Drowned name Ocean specifically as a spawn biome, so this is where you go to find them.

On top of those, the mobs that spawn in open terrain anywhere in the Overworld can appear here too, given the right light level. Mobs that only come from a structure or a spawner — breezes from trial chambers, blazes from fortresses, evokers from mansions — are deliberately not in this list.

Also spawns throughout Overworld

Structures found here

3 structures can generate in Ocean: Ocean Ruins, Shipwreck, and Buried Treasure.

  • Ocean Ruins — Scattered clusters of sunken buildings, in a sandstone warm-water variant and a stone cold-water variant.
  • Shipwreck — A wrecked sailing ship, generated upright, capsized, or broken in two, on the sea floor or beached on the sand.
  • Buried Treasure — A single chest buried beneath a beach or shallow sea bed, findable only with a buried treasure map from a shipwreck or ocean ruin.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find Ocean?

Ocean generates in the Overworld. A locate command finds the nearest one instantly; without cheats, exploring in one direction and watching the F3 screen's biome line is the reliable method.

What spawns in Ocean?

Cod, Dolphin, and Drowned spawn here specifically, and the usual Overworld mobs can appear given the right light level.

Does it rain in Ocean?

Yes — as rain. Cauldrons fill on their own during a storm and farmland stays hydrated.
