Overview
A Wooden Sword is the weapon you make in the first two minutes and should stop using by the first evening. It deals 4 damage a swing, which is five hits to kill a zombie and four to kill a creeper — long enough for the creeper to reach you — and it survives only 59 uses before breaking. What it is genuinely good for is the things a sword does besides fighting: cutting cobwebs, harvesting bamboo and sugar cane in one hit, and clearing leaves faster than a bare hand. On a fresh world the sensible sequence is to craft one from two planks and a stick while the first tree is still in your inventory, use it to get through the first night, and replace it with stone the moment you have cobblestone. Its one lasting use is as anvil fodder: with an enchantability of 15 it takes enchantments as readily as netherite does, so a wooden sword is a cheap way to gamble at a low-level enchanting table when you have levels to spare and no diamonds to risk.
Surviving the first night, cutting cobwebs and bamboo quickly, and — because wood enchants surprisingly well — acting as cheap test fodder at an enchanting table.

Tips

- Wait for the attack cooldown bar to refill between swings or you deal a fraction of the 4 damage listed.

Wooden Sword deals 4 damage per hit and swings 1.6 times a second, which works out at 6.4 damage per second when every swing is fully charged.
A swing that lands before the cooldown bar refills deals a fraction of that, so waiting for the bar is worth more than clicking faster.
That is 5 hits to kill a zombie or a creeper, the same for a skeleton, and 4 hits for a spider.
